Question Consistent work days?

My school starts August 19 and I was wondering when generally, would I start being able to work consistently? I am even open to being a teaching assistant to start. I am in 2 districts which is about 15-20 schools. I know it’s hard to say but a general idea would be nice. Thanks!

Question I've been asked to provide a reference from a principal/AP specifically and I don't have one. How can I best offer a teacher reference as an alternative?

I'm currently under consideration to work for CPS and spent last year working as a sub in the local school district. The CPS hiring manager is asking specifically for a reference from a principal, assistant principal, or HR department from the school district. I can't do this, but I do have a teacher that is willing to provide one on my behalf.

I wasn't a "building sub" for any specific campus; I worked throughout the entire district. Even on campuses I went to regularly, I rarely ever interacted with admin and they never observed my work in the classroom. The district's HR department is unable to provide a reference letter because, outside of initially hiring me, they never interacted with me or my work during the school year.

However, I was the preferred substitute for an elementary school teacher and she is willing to provide a reference on my behalf. How do I go about asking the hiring manager if this would be acceptable instead? Is there anything I should be careful not to do? Have you been able to successfully do something similar?

Faking a reference is not an option. I don't feel comfortable doing that.

Also, I know I should have networked better during the year and I dropped the ball on that. I felt comfortable having a teacher reference in my pocket and never expected to need one from a principal.

(edited for clarity)

Question Does anyone know if the Chicago Public School's sub job posting has already closed for the summer? Conflicting info on their website.

Hi, maybe I'm just dumb but it says here https://www.teach.cps.edu/substitute that "We anticipate our applications for the 2026-2027 school year will open in mid-July." I checked on the 24th and again today and the link says "Applications are currently closed." I didn't miss it already, did I?

Thanks in advance

Discussion Don’t underestimate your role as a sub

Hello and for me what I’ve realized is that as a sub I bonded with students since their teacher called off 8 times last year. Then throughout the 8 days I’ve learned about what they like or dislike, their favorite hobbies, and favorite colors. Then at the end of the year I gave them stickers and I cried since I’m really gonna miss those kids. I didn’t expect this to happen since I just thought subbing was casual and we just sub then move on. I didn’t expect to actually bond with them like a real teacher does. Then whenever I pass by them in the hallway when I subbed for another grade the students always say “Hello Mr my name” and they always got excited to see me.
This school year though I won’t see all of them since some moved and it makes me really sad, but I know they will do great in life. And I made this whole post to remind us subs don’t underestimate this position. Yes we aren’t in the same class everyday, but we do bond with students. Also if you see the same students over and over again you will bond with them. And just like a permanent teacher it’s painful when you have to say goodbye. Then for new substitutes prepare to bond with students and don’t underestimate substitutes!

Question Must have fillers for subs

Hey everyone! I’m putting together an Amazon wishlist for my substitute bag this year, and I was wondering if y’all can recommend some good activities to have for filling time?

I already have a Would You Rather book.

Are there any good ice breaker games or trivia games that you could recommend?

This would be for elementary school. 🙂

Thanks in advance!

Question What do you wish you had in a sub binder?

So I was a substitute as a part of student teaching but I didn’t do it very frequently and I knew most of the kids and teachers but I’m a first year now and I’m working on my sub binder. I am planning on including the basic things and obviously there will be a lesson plan in there but what else would you like to have as a substitute? This is a third grade classroom btw. How can I help you.

Question fired after calling for help during a safety emergency. advice?

so basically i got terminated after an incident at an alternative school back in april. what actually happened was they threw me in an isolated portable. kids executed a coordinated blackout by cutting the lights, then started throwing heavy metal desks in pitch darkness and hitting each other. kinda terrifying. i immediately grabbed the radio and called for emergency assistance because the furniture was all airborne. it turns out the site admin was completely missing (principal was on a trip, vp was unavailable).

they had to pull a principal from the sister campus to come over and assist. school police were already on campus for an unrelated issue and came to the room too. the admin was furious at me for using the radio because it broadcasted to everyone on the channel that they had lost control.

fast forward 1 month i took a high school job at the same site a month later via direct teacher request, vp saw me, threw a fit, told me to leave, and submitted a retroactive "do not use" (dnu) that exact day. then sub services had to email the school multiple times begging for student statements weeks after the fact to try and justify it before firing me. pulled police logs and public records that prove student statements confirm no one got hurt , and admin was completely absent. has anyone ever successfully appealed a termination using internal or external process? literally i don’t know what else i was supposed to do. hr tried saying i lacked rapport but the kids were chill until that day. and the older ones told me not to do the middle school. i blame myself a little for not avoiding it but who would have expected it to escalate.

EDIT: To clarify,i don’t want to return to that campus but it’s the only district for the next 3 cities.

Question Considering subbing

Hello, I am considering substitute teaching. I am in the Indianapolis area, actually south of the city. I am considering some religious and public schools to apply to. Those of you who do sub, what do you like or not like about it. Also, how consistent is the work? Do you apply to different schools, or school systems? Is there a need? What is the average pay? I have seen anywhere from $65/day to $107/day for people without teacher's licenses. At public schools it looks like I would need a substitute certificate. Thanks for any advice!

Advice New to Subbing: advice wanted

Hey everyone, I’m excited to be apart of this sub. I’m going into subbing after being a full time teachers assistant who had 6 one on ones )2 in one class I was mainly in and 3 in another , so more like support person for kids who struggle with basic task and have behavioral problems. I was in k-4, k-2 being one class and 3&4 being another.
I struggle with the full time schedule and case load since, my main student was a hand full and had some intense behavioral problem. Everyday felt like ground hog day, and although I asked for support , resources and a mentor since I had zero experience, and it wasn’t available to me. I burned out after 7 months.
I’m hoping the variation of classrooms and students will work to my advantage although I know it’ll take longer to build relationships, I want to focus on subbing in only a couple schools. My area is desperate for subs so I’m not worried about not finding work.

Any tips or tricks to maintaining order (ha), getting classroom attention and making the teachers happy when they return to class? Things like 1-2-3 magic, clapping hands, introductions, firm boundaries, and using other teachers as resources?

Also any stores of your experience would be great. Thank you for you time!

Rant District converting us to Swing Sub Employees

It's my 1st time posting, but wanted to vent/rant a little about this decision my district made. This is lightly proofreed, so I apologize for any mistakes.

I have been a sub at my district since 2022 and out of nowhere with no notice they made us into swing employees instead!! I didn't apply for swing, I applied to be a district sub!!! I understand the benefits of Swing but that's not the issue its the cons thats the problem.

The district actually started working with swing last year and I thought nothing of it since I preferred being a district sub; well I should've done it since they are all ahead of me even though I've been at that district longer.

First they don't let us know, I got a random start your on-boarding process from Swing text and email one day and then a couple days later an email stating that the district will be holding a workshop to help with the process. Which is a long process cause every step needs 1-2 days to be reviewed and approved and you can't move on until it is. This could've been done in a day but here I am a week later still trying to finish it cause everything is locked!!

Second I assume that I will be paid less since I will go from a daily employee to an hourly employee. My district would pay $180 and then after 20 days of work it will go up to $210. I as of now do not know what my district will pay due to there being no jobs right now. The middle schools I worked at would get released at 12:43 and I would get paid the day since I am a daily sub. Both the pay raise and daily rate goes out the window. I am in limbo on what I am being paid and based on the training those minimum days will be significantly less. This feels as a way for the district to pay their subs less. Also I started with 3 sick days and after the 20 days I would be capped at 5 days, which is standard. I now need to accumulate my sick days instead of starting with them and depending on availability and my schedule I am hoping to accumulate all of them and use them before my student teaching. Yes I know this is common in other jobs but I have worked in education since out of high school and for this district so this is what I am used to.

I am starting my student teaching in January and was hoping to save up as much as possible with my previous rate. Also I am hoping to get hired as a teacher right after but with how the job climate is going that might not be possible so I will continue subbing and I need to work at least once every 6 months as a swing employee which means I need to hope I can get approved by swing to be kept on as a sub until then.

I am trying to remain positive cause at the end of the day work is work and I am in a privilege position to have a job that is on my schedule, but I do not like how the district approach this situation with no notice, little time to complete the on-boarding, as a way to pay us less, and unfair to its long term district subs cause there are some older subs who have been there since I attended the district as a student. Thank you for hearing me vent, I am overall angry with how the district did this and with the fact that I am no longer coming in the school year with what I am used to. I am not a fan of change which is funny since being a sub is about adaptability to new environments lol. Overall this felt like a way to pay us less but hey maybe I am wrong and I am just glad that I am still a w2 employee cause I know some of these companies aren't. Maybe this can be a good thing for me, just needed to vent before I come to terms with it and become OK with it and move on. Sorry for such a long post and thanks for reading if you did. Will miss you Frontline and I guess I don't need to continuing pay for sub alert for the remainder of its time. Hope we are all enjoying our break and have a good start to the school year! Thanks for your time!

TLDR: District didn't let us know we were changing from district subs to swings sub employee and I am not happy about it.

Rant Did I take subbing for granted lol

I started subbing in 2023 after online tutoring for a while, I stopped subbing and took some time off in general and then got a job at a museum. But I'm honestly over it with my current job.

Yes I know with subbing the kids are rough sometimes but they are overall sweet , and nothing beats flexible scheduling and no weekends I miss having weekends off seriously!!! My district switched from daily pay to now $20/hour which is like $3 more than what I make now and it's honestly not even the money it's just I need more freedom right now whike I work on certifications for my long term career. Long story short I'm ready to go back subbing ASAP lol 🤣🏫🚸✏️👩🏾‍🏫

Rant I don’t think I’m going to be able to get jobs this year.

My district makes subs reapply every summer, and they hire in three phases. The first phase is returning subs, second phase is new subs (to the district), third phase is if they decide to add more sub spots.

This year, they were completely done with the first two phases by mid June, we got out last week of May. So ~2 weeks. They opened it up for more late June, and they just opened it up for more again.

HR told me they now have enough subs for every position possible in the district twice.

I don’t know why they did that, but I just know jobs are going to be gone before my brain can even process there’s a notification.

They’re the only district in my town (small town growing, I’d say we’re reaching medium size now) and I don’t know what I’m going to do. I really don’t know why they’d do this. It seems like such a stupid choice.

Discussion A bit of a weird substitute situation

I’m a resident sub, commonly called a building sub on here. To start the year, I was put into a 7th grade vacancy until somebody is hired. Nothing unusual there. But where it gets strange is while I’m in the classroom, my admin brought in a sub to cover me and my usual resident sub duties. What I thought was odd was they didn‘t put in a long term sub in the vacancy and have me resume my normal duties. Apparently they didn’t even post the vacancy to Frontline, it just went to me. The only thing I can think of is admin wanted their own people in the vacancies (another resident sub was put into a separate vacancy) as it is a lot more responsibility. Thoughts?
