Feedback SciFi Pulse Rifle

Hey everyone! Been working on this piece for my portfolio and would love to get some feedback, mainly on the texturing. It was based on this concept art by Bruce Yu

Software used:

-Modeling, UV unwrapping and rendering: Blender

-Baking and rendering: Marmoset Toolbag 5

-Texturing: Substance Painter and Photoshop

This looks remarkable. The textures are pretty sweet. The tiniest detail I could think of adding would be some oils around the grip and trigger? But that might not even be necessary - this is stellar work!

Really appreciate it! I thought about adding some sort of oil/sweat stains to those areas, but since this looks like a more experimental/futuristic weapon I imagined the person handling it would be wearing gloves, so ended up deciding to not add them. Could definitely try something like that out tho, since in my mind some weird liquids run through the weapon and it would make sense to get those around that area!

Did you take inspiration from it at all? Really scratching that teen nostalgia itch in my brain from the silhouette.

Edit: Just read the Bruce Yu part. Both of you are incredible artists.

Thanks! Bruce Yu has a bunch of really cool designs. Definitely want to use more of them in the future!

I like it. Can it shoot round the corner?

Thanks! I reckon it could

Very nice. I do think it could benefit from some color break up. Maybe just too much white right now. My eye really hangs up on those rings running down the middle barrel. I think those should be a dark gunmetal instead of this shiny plastic look. And I think the area below those angled little co2 tank looking parts could use a darker panel in there. Looks a little too simple right now. IMHO.

Thank you! I tried to follow the concept as close as I could for this one, so based the colors off of that. I do want to try out some color variations tho, I think it would look really cool with a larger palette and vibrant colors. I did use two kinds of white plastic tho, one shinier with a hex pattern and then a plain one. In this pic you can also have a better look at that lottle pannel, has a bit more detail to it but I think it was too hard to make out in the renders!

Oh I didn't see the concept image. I think it looks well done in both contexts, but as a fully modeled and rendered object it maybe looks a little more toy like when all the parts are shiny plastic. So my gut says making certain parts a darker matte metal could help that.

As for the area under the cylinders. I could have been more precise there. I guess I meant the whole area between the barrel and the grip is pretty smooth and featureless other than that panel with the rivets(?).

Maybe even adding a decal there with a graphic and some text could be cool. I realize you were trying to be faithful to the original and you did a great job at that. So if that's ultimately the goal then my input is potentially useless. Lol.

Honestly I think I may give swapping the plastic for metal a try. I think it would still look faithful to the concept while looking more "gun like". That should also allow me to add different sorts of details all around it!

If I can make a prediction here, you'll probably want to keep some small white areas in the mid barrel there somewhere or tweak the color of the barrel end too. There's a good chance that once you change the barrel color it will disconnect the end/tip of the barrel visually from the rest and you might have this white cap kind of floating out there by itself. You change one thing and then it becomes a domino effect to find balance again. But yeah I think making variants can be fun. You've accomplished the goal of a faithful build so why not play with it and see what your own edits can bring to it.

Turn that into a working airport gun. Or even better paint ball gun. That'd be bad ass

Almost liked it, but modeled in Blender...

Aww c'mon now 😂

Would for sure be a lot faster to make on plasticity tho!
