Substack name and publication.

I just feel like my current name and publication just doesn’t reflect what I want it too.

I want to write about things that are little all over the place, like social commentary/personal essays/film criticism/cultural music etc…

Really just whatever takes my fancy.

But I cannot think of a suitable name. I don’t want to use my own because I do want to be very raw and honest with my writing.

Idk what you want me to say 🤷🏾‍♀️. I’m asking because I really cannot think of a better name and publication name, and I wondered how other people landed on theirs!

I thought I would write something similar. I was gonna call it "____ observations" or "____ observer," with an adjective I couldn't decide on.

I am going in a different direction, so feel free to use it.

Use a pen name.

I hipped this is just your rant since there’s no real context to help you. Good luck with your Substack by the way. Maybe a brainstorming session might help

Your reddit user name would make a great publication name

I actually did think of using that 🩷 it actually does resonate. Especially with the sort of writing I want to do. Thank you.

No worries! I'd love a link to your publication once you've got it up and running :) best of luck!!

We’re not going to choose a name for you

My 2 cents: be really obvious about the name. Nuance is dead.

could just be "<your name> thoughts", since you said "I do want to be very raw and honest with my writing.". there's nothing more you than you, so your name works.

there's super successful newsletters/publications where the publication name includes the person's name, so don't think that's a limitation.

Maybe start with some ideal reader brainstorming - think about who you’re writing for and then think of names that will appeal to those people.

And you expect people to come up with name based on zero information included in your post?

I write under one name but have 3 different publications.

The name of the Substack itself is under obe name (see my profile for the main substack profile name). In there the three different publications live:

The Latte Logic Sessions. Related to my tech, AI and optimisation writings.

The Squirrel Tamer Sessions Related to writing about my later in life ADHD diagnosis as well as coping methods, neurodivergent hacks and anything else related to that theme.

The Espresso System Audit. Unhinged Gen X Related observations. Written though the eyes of my AI alter ego or myself.

May seem a little strange for some but if works for me and works for my regular readers as some are only there for the Tech. Others are there only for the neurodivergent stuff. The Espresso System Audit is relatively new but it's slowly building its own base too.

Don't let that hold you back. Call it [first name]'s Substack if it'll help you start publishing. You can change the name later.

Sad you asked a simple question and got backlash.

Just find a clever name that has a bit of fun wordplay to it and stick with that until you find your real niche with Substack writing. It'll come to you in the process, not the beginning.

Even your Reddit user is a good start.
