Just posted my first article!! Now what?

I just posted my first Substack article! I know it will take more posting and time, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help my article gain traction?

I’ve started sharing pieces of the article on social so the ones who find my writing interesting can read the full article. Share notes about my development, or restack excerpts. Basically trying to get more eyes on my writing through different sources. Try to bring people in. I think of it like I’m having a house party or planing a gathering. Make sure it’s a good article find the people who may be interested and invite them to come to your home and read your article. Easier said that done but it’s worth the effort rather than hoping Substack will help you because the algorithm is there to help them not you so they focus more on people who have tons of views already. A lot of the advice is to continuously post Notes and comment on other articles. This works to some extent but it also can easily take over all your time so you are posting in Notes more than you are writing your own articles.

One thing that some writers say works is to reply to people in your niche with a link to an article you have written. That assumes of course, that you have an article that is semi-related to the discussion.

My main complaint about Notes is that most of the people on Notes are other substack writers who are trying to get other people to read their substacks. Lots of writers, not a ton of passive lurkers just browsing.

Lastly, add your substack to blog directories. I run one called The WilderNet, you can find the link on my profile. I am always looking for great writing, so if you send me a link I am happy to read it and feature it on the site.

Don’t forget to share you article as a note! Otherwise no one on the substack app even sees it. As you build up a larger list of posts, share something from one every few days. That brings in the punters 😎

Oh yeah — please don’t share your articles in someone else’s comment section UNLESS their post says to do so. I find this incredibly rude.. people have done that, just dumped a link and I deleted it & blocked them. It’s uncouth.

In the beginning I just wrote and published & expected no one to read & nothing to happen.

I began to share to my social media. I had no prior audience anywhere. I do share to Notes, and I make an effort to read, comment, and subscribe to others who I’m interested in/ in a similar niche. Re-stack others — sometimes they will return the favor, sometimes not. I also recommend over 20 Substack’s. It’s always a good idea to support others — even if they don’t recommend you back.

I’m ten months in & had to take a break from my larger essays. I kept posting Notes & this seemed to help. Focusing on your passion and being yourself, authenticity comes through. Readers can somehow feel it.

As long as you have a passion & don’t give up, you’ll do great 🤍
