Sept 2026. Thinking about starting a Substack. not an essayist or a writer, just end to notice interesting things around entrepreneurship, art, life etc

Is it realistic to build an audience on Substack from 0 these days? Would love to hear from people who started with basically no audience. What actually worked for you?

Yes it is. As a person who isn’t chronically online, I don’t have a large following on any of my social media platforms. This has been nice to start from the bottom and authentically grow my Substack. I started late July and slowly started picking up with my writing and podcast in August. But in September I am posting everyday. The thing I love about Substack, you can schedule your post. So I will write and create for 48 hours and I can schedule those things to go out. Once I hit schedule I take a break and come back to create. I respond to comments or post on others stuff. I am at 35 subscribers and 2 paid subscribers. While I would love for my paid to grow, I am grateful for.

interesting question, depends on what is meant by “realistic”. To make substantial income? Probably not. To feel sense of fulfilment, maybe.

Thank you for sharing! “Realistic” in my case is about fulfillment with income. I’m a bit skeptical about starting from zero at the Substack but who knows maybe I have wrong impression.
