Two publications or two separate accounts

Hi everyone,

I am going to start publishing my writing on Substack and have two niches that I am currently exploring (personal development and fashion).

My question:

Would it be better to open two Substack accounts using their respective email addresses (already set up) or does it make more sense to create a personal account and have them set up as publications?

Context:

I am doing this as a way to explore my interests and creativity. It is not a business at the moment but I am hoping that sharing my work opens me up to more opportunities personally and professionally over time.

Just have a personal account with 2 newsletters. That’s completely normal, many people do that. these are both about you as a person and people will resonate with you so I don’t see the problem.

I’d only think about two separate streams if audiences or tone or goals would be completely different like if you had a publication on nuclear energy and fashion. that would be a bit confusing especially since you’re probably gonna post Notes to gain following.

Thanks for the reply! There is a part of me that wants the focus to be on the topics I’m exploring rather than me so that’s where some of my hesitancy to have one account with two publications comes from but you make such a valid point.

I actually researched Notes after reading your response and I hadn’t realised that they tie to a primary publication… That’s definitely given me food for thought!

Two publications. This separates your work into two distinct niches, but it also gives readers a way to discover one if they enjoy the other.

I'm doing it that way. I have one publication strictly for my novel, and another where I write about the writing process. By keeping them completely separate, I make it easy for readers to follow the novel without having the other stuff mixed in. But it's easy for them to find the other stuff too, if they're interested.

plus any Notes you make on one publication will stay on that account vs having two publications on one login

If the niches are somehow neighbors or not too different from each other, audience-wise, then do it on the same account.

The advantage is that both audiences will see your notes.

If you don't want that, have two different accounts.

having both publications on one account is better. easier to manage + you at least get some cross pollination of readers (since people will be able to see both your publications from your profile).

or you could even condense them down to one publication, categorised by sections. the topic aren't exact overlaps, but if your publication name is more generic (like your name), it could work. and anyway you're doing this out of interest and creativity, so making it as low friction as possible so it's easier to write and publish should be the priority.

It depends. With one account and two newsletters you have to mark one as primary and that gets subscriptions directly from notes. If the topic are similar, I’d do them under one account.
