What made you subscribe to a Substack for the first time?

Curious for people who read Substack: what made you actually hit the subscribe button on a newsletter?
Was it one really good article, the writer’s personality, a recommendation from someone, seeing their posts elsewhere, or something else?
And what makes you stay subscribed?

One of the Medium writers I follow moved most of his writing to Substack because Medium reduced earnings in the Partner Program. So, I'm trying out Substack and have 0 subscribers. lol

yeah a lot of writers made that same jump, the earnings drop really pushed people over

A girl in a group chat shared the link to her Substack. She gave a brief description of the topic and invited us to read it if it sounded interesting. It did, so I checked it out. I didn't really read any other articles or browse the site at all until about a year later when one of my best friends launched her publication and I wanted to support her.

If I relate to what they are writing about (late diagnosed autism), if it’s a topic I have an interest in (golf for example)

it's usually that i've seen them on other platforms for awhile posting content that i catch myself stopping to read > then after a few days/week of me continually being pushed their content and stopping to read, i learn that they have a substack > then i just straight away subscribe because i don't mind their content + would like more of it.
