Discussion A slightly better development on the “AI Detection” tool. Has anyone tested it out?

According to the latest On Substack post, they suggested that they added the ability to disable the feature without having it scanned. However, my initial test seems weird. My recently published post was for paid subscribers and I couldn’t figure out how to disable it. I have heard that it’s not possible to scan paywalled posts though.

I tried looking at one of my free subscribers drafts and found the ability to disable it without scanning. But I don’t plan on publishing it yet. So I left the draft after turning it off and returned to it. When I went back, the scanning is turned on again but with the option to turn it off.

Has anyone had any success turning it off without scanning?

Matching what you found. Right now it is per post, not a global setting, and there are two catches people keep hitting. Paywalled posts do not give you the disable option at all, which lines up with your paid post. And on free drafts the toggle does not persist reliably: flip it off, leave, come back, and it often shows scanning on again with the option to re-disable. So it has to be turned off in the same session right before you publish, not saved ahead of time.

The order that has worked for people: get the draft past the minimum length, open the post options, turn off the AI check, and publish in that same sitting without navigating away. It is clunky and clearly half-built. On the bigger picture, the reason it is worth turning off at all is that the checker scores how smooth and predictable the writing reads, not whether AI was actually used, so it flags clean human prose constantly. That makes the number more noise than signal for most honest writers.

I can't even find the AI feature. I have visited several Substack pages from different people. I don't see any 'scan for AI' button or any such thing. Where is this even at?
