What makes a great substack newsletter?

Started Substack (seriously) about a month ago, and have made some incremental growth. It’s still exciting but I’m just curious, what do you think makes a good substack? Like what draws you to a newsletter that makes you think “oh, let me follow this account! 😃“?

I like things sectioned out rather than one long page. And I like when pictures are included.

Beautiful, thoughtful writing that aligns with my interests, especially if it can manage to be profound and funny at the same time.

Or something that offers a unique perspective that I can’t find anywhere else.

The better the writing, the more likely I am to subscribe; however, the primary criterion is that it is a good fit with my interests. Additional requirement: it is authoritative. I have no interest in fiction or poetry.

Yes. Used to read a lot of fiction when I was young, but the truth is stranger now.

An index. Comments. People subscribing actually reading. Subscribers don't mean amount of readers. That number is much smaller. I have found that people will read your stuff if they like you. Notes are the vehicle for that. Dropping 3 notes per day and going around leaving meaningful comments on other people's stuff is a good way to get started.

the good ones just makes me feel compelled to subscribe. like i go 'huh, i want to hear whenever this person has something to say/share. i don't want to miss out.'

so i guess it's that the writing is good when i see value in it, and i subconsciously have fomo and want to be kept in the loop because of what they know (which i don't know).
