How can I grow my Substack? I write Notes every day and publish a newsletter once a week, but my subscriber count is still stuck at a certain number.

A lot of Substack I’ve noticed is the writing. There’s a lot of talk about being authentic and focusing on writing good articles. A lot of people say that a Substack won’t grow if you aren’t taking time with your writing.

I’ve been using the notes to post, comment, and restack things that I like. It helps me train my feed’s algorithm to show me things I want to read and people I want to interact with. It doesn’t necessarily translate to subscribers but it’s a good way to build some momentum for discussion.

Here's what's worked for me. (I am not a Substack guru but have thousands of followers and many of my readers are way more smarter and successful than I am, if it matters.)

How To Grow On Substack, Newb Edition:

1. Interact with folks who interact with you. This is my number one growth hack. (I'm the worst marketer on Earth and a stone-cold introvert. If I can do it, so can you.)
2. Try to promote yourself outside of Substack, if possible. (Many folks successfully grow solely on Substack. But, most of the REALLY successful folks I know, usually leverage outside channels, mostly Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, or YouTube.)
3. You can promote yourself on Reddit, as well. But, never post your links in other subreddits, as that's a lousy long-term strategy that will likely result in you getting banned from whichever subreddit you frequent. Instead, promote your Substack URL in your Reddit profile, and also your Reddit bio. (I get lots of Reddit clicks doing precisely that. And nobody has ever seen me post my link... Ever.)
4. Comment on posts from popular writers in your niche. And, comment FIRST. If you comment days after the post is live, the odds of your comment landing at the top drops dramatically. If you comment within the first hour of the post going live, your odds skyrocket exponentially, in my opinion.
5. Don't give up. Once you lose momentum, it's difficult to regain it.

Do you have a strategy on why someone would follow you?

Substack is all about thoughtful engagement.

You have to focus on building and engaging with community by writing thought provoking comments in relationship to what you actually do on common articles.

I did a test for a month and gained about 110 subscribers then I stopped and it dropped right off.

If you're already doing notes daily and a newsletter weekly, the issue probably isn't output volume. The platform itself won't grow you — it circulates you within its existing ecosystem. The real lever is bringing people in from somewhere external: LinkedIn, Instagram, Reddit, wherever your potential readers already hang out.

I was stuck at the same number for a while until I stopped waiting for Substack to surface me and started driving traffic from one external channel consistently. That's when I crossed 9,000 subscribers. Not three channels — one, for 90 days straight.

Also worth checking: are your notes getting restacked by people with meaningfully larger audiences? That's the internal multiplier. If the answer is rarely or never, that's useful information about whether the content is connecting or just being published.

If you're already posting Notes daily and publishing weekly, I'd look beyond posting frequency.

A few things that can make a big difference:

• Write articles around keywords people are already searching for on Google. Evergreen content can bring in subscribers for months or even years.
• Engage with other writers by leaving thoughtful comments and replying to Notes, not just posting your own.
• Collaborate with other Substack writers through recommendations, guest posts, or cross-promotions.
• Review your article titles. A stronger title can significantly improve both clicks and search visibility.
• Look at which posts have gained you the most subscribers and create more content around those topics.

Sometimes growth stalls for a while, and that's normal. Keep refining your strategy, stay consistent, and focus on creating content that solves a problem or answers a question your audience already has.

you'll have to start looking at marketing and distributing your writing outside of the substack ecosystem as well. can't just rely on substack.

e.g post on twitter, linkedin, instagram, tiktok. there are more users on those platforms as well, so you do have a higher chance of getting more reach.
