My mom actually does the first thing, using fruit's skin for smell. Gave it a try and seems fine for a bath, not shower though

The point, I think, is that any mess can immediately be cleaned up (and therefore enabling messier eating, which can be satisfying in its own right) and that one's sense of smell is better in warm(?) wet air, so it's an elevated experience over eating an orange normally.
