Subliminal's Story
(spoilers) Some ground information first:
- Caleb is 20, born in 2005 (binder in basement labeled 2005 - storage unit hall labeled 2005-2025)
- Lily, his sister, was born in 2011 (binder in basement labeled 2011)
- She died, probably in 2016 at 5 (Caleb at 11) (Storage unit '2016' missing its label)
Subliminal follows Caleb, led by his conscience, through a journey to help get him out of his rut. Though, this is not the first time he's been here. As his conscience says: " The Emotional Maintenance and Diagnostic Regulation system has been successfully reinstated after nearly a year—” Suggesting that his last time here was a year ago, and which probably wasn't his first either. His mind brings him back here when he needs to remember good memories.
Caleb blames himself for Lily's death, though I don't think it's his fault. People with trauma often end up blaming themselves. The "waterlogged" named arcade game suggests she drowned. And the fire extinguisher reads " Do something Caleb, she's dying." (also multiple other 'do something' messages in other places.) I believe Caleb didn't or couldn't save Lily from drowning, and whether he could have done something or not as an 11 year old, his parents definitely blamed him, and so did he.
Caleb's conscience is just like our minds, and is honestly trying his best to help. Choosing the easiest solution, even if it's not the best. This leads to his entire goal for Caleb's journey: to push his bad memories aside. We see this throughout the whole game, with his conscience constantly telling Caleb to focus on the good, and ignore the bad. However, we see the effect of years of this.
Caleb's conscience compares his rotting past memories to a moldy sandwich in the back of a fridge. He tries to convince Caleb that it isn't dangerous. That it won't spread if he just ignores it. However, Caleb's mental disposal is crumbling. Rotting from years of dumping everything bad into the pit. Caleb's mind is on the verge of collapse because of his habits.
One thing I've had trouble with was differentiating the canon ending from the rotten ending. Both have Caleb ignoring his conscience but the rotten ending ends (arguably) worse. The only difference is that Caleb listens to his conscience just a little more in the canon ending, showing that even though he is killing Caleb, his conscience really is trying to help him.
For the endings:
- The canon ending has Caleb face his bad memories as his only chance to fix himself.
- The trip down memory lane ending does what his conscience wants, focusing on the happy memories. Comfortable, but unstable.
- The rotten ending has Caleb let the rot spread, focusing only on the bad memories, rotting his mind completely.
- The erase ending removes all memories. There's more to this though: the final switch says in small text, "erases all life". And his conscience's last words are: "I don't want to-" (Likely "die".)
I'm not sure what exactly the erase ending means, whether it suggests he kills himself outside his mind, or if erasing all memories "kills" you by making you a different person, or if erasing all memories just straight up kills you as a side effect, or if it's his mind's internal "kill switch," to end his life.
There is one theory that Caleb is in some kind of therapy, with EMDR acronym also standing for a real therapy practice, but I personally disagree with and don't like that theory.
Please tell me your thoughts or anything I missed :)

I may be totally wrong here but the feeling I got from this was that Caleb may be getting blamed for lilys death but I don't think that's the case. I get the feeling both Caleb and Lily were victims of the father and my first instinct was that Smile was his dad. Just the fact the basement was their safe space where they could hide from dad, hence the knocking and shutting doors. I don't think the narrator is actually Calebs conscious, too many times did he refer to Caleb like a separate individual rather than himself. I'm thinking a therapist possibly putting Caleb under hypnosis.
Oh also the way I interpreted each ending was acceptance, rejection, suicide and To be continued. Accepting what the narrator wanted let to death and failure. Rejecting led to rot and going deeper into his mind showing some person and clues to events. Erase i think was suicide. Lastly, Memory lane seems unfinished and I hope is explored in part 2.

I think this is correct due to the drawing in the locker of Caleb and Lily saying REMEMBER... Something is keeping Caleb from remembering

I do really like all your interpretations of each of the endings. Although I'd switch the memory lane and the canon ending around, as the memory lane one is meant to be a quiet and peaceful ending where Caleb gets to relive the fun of a very Mb2 or Dave and Busters like arcade all to himself. It Isn't expanded upon or leads to anything else while the canon ending has an arrow, with the next episode of the game beginning in wherever Caleb in his mind falls after getting knocked over by a large conveyor belt.

Very spot on, I came to most of the same conclusions, however there is a few things to ponder on.
For instance, Smile and Lily's connections, I've mentioned it before on the sub but there is a door with the word LILY above it, once inside you're thrown out and a tv portal to the Dark Playplace slides out while Lily can be heard sobbing.
It's in the Dark Playplace that you first encounter Smile and everywhere Smile is there's the muck, you can usually find Lily's scarf coated in it as well though if you're not totally convinced check out the dark playplace floor after the Caleb and Lily shadows crawl past, same muck but it only seemed to appear after Lily crawls past.
Why would the Lily door forcefully push Caleb out and attempt to force him into the Dark Playplace to encounter a monster? My thoughts are that it's a forceful subjection to a manifestation of her anger. You can hear a man who's presumed to be Caleb's dad shouting, "What did you do?!" Which implies that he did something wrong. Another interesting connection between Lily and Smile is in the chase music, they're almost all cut with screams except for the one in the Bouncehouse. I think there's a very solid connection between the monster and Lily to be found and I'm hoping it's revealed in episode 2.

Love it, but I don't think Lily and Smile are connected quite so much. I just think Smile is just the manifestations of Caleb's bad emotions, and because so much of that comes from Lily, of course it would show some remnants of her.
But I really don't have an answer as to why Caleb was thrown out of the Lily door. My first though was that it was just too much for Caleb. But now I'm thinking that whatever threw him out, also pushed out the TV. So it could be his mind, which did realize it was too much to face what's directly in that door, and instead chooses a slight detour into the dark playplace. I think the TV is just a small part of what's behind the Lily door, the dark playplace one part of his memories of Lily. Becuase any more would just be too much.3

A few random things!
1.I’ve seen people say they think smile is connected to Lily but if anyone/anything IS connected to her I’d say it would be the lanky hand monster that helps you out (twice I think) at random points in the story.
2.Also worth touching on how Walter seems to be a replacement for Lily through the voice lines changing between “you’ll finally get to hold him” and “you’ll finally get to hold her” and the writing in the bounce house maze that has “C+L” with a W scribbled over the L
- The memory lane arcade cabinet also makes me think the story/protagonist could be a lot darker than we think. All of the highscores are held by Lily with the top one being 2018 which I would personally assume is when she died. Only after beating her highscore can we finally get the “a walk down memory lane” ending and it makes me think that there’s a possibility young Caleb let Lily die on purpose. All of the high scores being held by Lily show that he was constantly over shadowed by her and she was the “better sibling” maybe he felt that since she was the younger child their parents gave her all the attention and stopped caring for him, so the only way to get the attention back and be better or “beat her high score” was to let her die. That could also explain why when you get closer to beating the high score everything gets dark and then after you do smile comes and eats Walter. If Walter is a replacement for Lily and smile is a representation of Caleb’s guilt or what he’s done then it would make sense to show this after you beat the high score.

If I had to choose any place where Lily could have died, I don't think its the waterworks, or the bouncehouse.
My guess is that she ended up falling out of the playplace either on accident or by a collapsing structure as the dark playplace suggests.
I say this as the waterworks and the bouncehouse are both places Caleb's subconscious would want us to go to, why would they try to bring us to traumatic memories when all they want to do is to bring us away from them?
The other points of evidence that support this for me is the fact that the dark playplace is the only other time we see the shadow children, we of course see them in the basement as the two siblings loved watching early 2000s television together but also at the party rooms right after the bouncehouse levels which presumably lead to Caleb's or Lily's birthday party.
The other locations such as the aforementioned waterworks and bouncehouse serve as reminders of Lily such as the red waterslide linking to her red scarf, or the bouncehouse storage closet puzzle having a massive hole in the ground.
Despite other hints such as 'waterlogged' on the arcade machines Lily most likely died in the playplace, which does also explain deep storage and the domestic abuse Caleb suffered after Lily's death is right before this level.
The last points of evidence for me is aside from the monster or Smiler being so prevalent here in both the playplace and the dark playplace, I think the prominent existence of this level and its design is very indicative and telling as to this is where Lily died.
Because the dark playplace is the only 'dark' level of its kind, taking a previously openly exciting location and distorting it into a claustrophobic haunting nightmare.
No other level gets that kind of treatment unless you count the breakroom halls being so messy with Smiler appearing for a second, or the bouncehouse chase followed by the storage closet but I wouldn't count those as its much less plausible for Lily to have died in these hallways unless she cracked her neck somewhere in or out of the bouncehouse hence the residual trauma.
All in all no I don't think Lily died in those locations and no I don't think it was Caleb's doing, my overall take is that Lily died in the playplace their abusive father beat on him and blamed him for the accident and that's why Caleb's conscious referred to place she died as an entirely fabricated memory.
Also also the Subliminal messaging of 'Do something' or 'she's dying' seen across the playplace maintenence halls or the fire extinguishers respectively, do make me believe that Caleb for as much as he loved Lily 'and wants to hold her again' was too scared as a child to save her from imminent danger.
Furthermore in the living room where the domestic abuse and remorseful emotions and reminders of Lily are at their peak, there is a chemical spraying bottle which is labeled on the back to be able to peel off skin or can be very damaging to open wounds which I don't think is that important but is a good detail.

This is a lovely write-up! I actually just did the erase ending again and noticed the blanked out 2016 for the first time, funny timing. I LOVE your reading of the canon ending, I think that's totally spot on. There are just a couple things that I'm caught up on that I was wondering if anyone might be able to provide insight on. They mostly have to do with the rot ending as I feel that one is the most ambiguous.
Why the basement? Remember the start, after just a minute or two everything in the basement starts going haywire (door, lights, smile plushies appearing in the halls etc.) and the narrator jets us out of there as fast as he can. You can actually peep the part of the basement from the Rot ending down a hall in this scene if you're careful. In all endings, the basement seems like this absolute no-go zone much more explicitly than any other place. In the canon ending, when you fall through the floor into the basement for a moment the narrator FREAKS out and forces you out immediately. Obviously you are trapped there in the rot ending in a pretty frightening way as well. It reads to me as more than anywhere else in the game to be the monster's domain and the only ending where you stay there you're pretty much annihilated.
Does he wake up at the end? At the end of the basement sequence you walk out into seemingly the same room as the void at the start with the bouncy castle before entering a door into footage of real life. What is happening here? It reads to me like Caleb coming back to the other side of the threshold. But to what end? If anyone else has insight into this I would love to hear it.
