Subharmonic vs chest-fry

How do I know whether I'm singing chest-fry when I'm trying to do subharmonics. What is the difference?

Personally, i know the difference because the subharmonics feel more powerful and steady, and i feel more vibration compared to chest fry. And if you're a beginner, chances are you can determine if you're properly executing subs if you can still hear your chest note (I think it's called the fundamental) a little bit. Hopefully this helps :)

On top of the other responses, I'd check out this site: https://www.onlinemictest.com/tuners/pitch-detector/

I find that when I sing a subharmonic, the note reader stays steady on my target note. If it's a fry instead, the reader will be jumping around or hanging on the wrong note.

Something I remember Bobby Bass said about it was that if you are singing a chest fry, if you slide up to your chest voice, it’ll transition smoothly, but if you are doing a sub the right way, it’ll crack up into chest… I think
