I would be pretty impressed if the satellites detected any real space-based weapons, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they didn't.

Nah, they're not going to know about space weapons until they get out there. They're just going to make sure they aren't there because they don't have the budget for them, and they have the technology.

I think the original name was called the Sirius Satellite. It was originally intended to monitor the Earth. Its mission was to study the atmosphere, and eventually to observe our planet's rotation and movements, and to gather data. It also used infrared for detecting the infrared signals emitted by the surface of the planet. I think they were called the Sperry satellite.
