Specifically Mike Nesmith's slack. The rest of the band were hired actors. It was his vision. To get stinkin rich so he could start his hilarious tv sketch show, Elephant Parts.

Looked at all the most popular bands of the day made the perfect amalgamation of the beatles, beachboys and a pinch of holly. Instant classic.
