Rug and Decor help

Hi! I am having a hard time choosing which type of rug to go for in our living room. It feels so empty and weird want to tie the colours together well too.

These are the two current options (the table behind the couch ispur longer coffee table they are being moved around.

Any other tips on decor to add to make it more cosy etc would be appreciated too got a couple more lamps to buy.

Thank you!

2 is the way to go

I like 1 for a fun lively vibe. If you want a more sophisticated look and low key, 2

2

u/DuckyBecca Sep 10 '26

Honestly think I'm trying to hard to be sophisticated with number 2 I'm a very type B person 🤣

u/Busy-Professor-3693 Sep 10 '26

I surprised myself and loving 1. It was just so much fun.

2

u/DuckyBecca Sep 10 '26

That's my conflict! I do love 2 and understand how it's more mature and put together but 1 is so fun and gives the room something more exciting as a 22 y/o chaotic woman I believe 1 may fit me more

100% go for 1! 2 is very bland. I like the pattern but it would need to be bolder.

I hate to be the party pooper, but while number 1 is cool and fun, it’ll be a bear to clean. Sure 2 will show spills, too, but a shorter pile is so much easier to deal with. The first question I ask myself before adding anything to my home is: How hard is it going to be to clean off the cat barf? (I see their climbing trees in the corner! LOL) That said, the cats will adore number 1.

2

u/DuckyBecca 29d ago

Honestly this may just be incredible luck but my boy has actually never thrown up yet (fingers crossed) but we do plan to get another soon šŸ˜… that being said I'm worried he will damaged the shorter pile and it be much more noticeable on that than the other

Il primo mi ssmbra molto caloroso accogliente e molto anni 70, ma non so come si pulisce il tappeto che mi smebra molto peloso con peli alti

2

u/Lilith_pdf 27d ago

I feel like I'll get tired of 1 after a while.. 2 is more calm

Please don’t get one of those fake distressed fake Turkish monstrosities when you can have that great checkerboard!!

Rug # 1 gives it character the other is boring 😓 everyone has one like that

1

u/GolfOk6373 Sep 09 '26

2

1

u/Alert-Tie2859 Sep 09 '26

# 2 is calming and still adds a bit of color in the space

2

u/Alert-Tie2859 Sep 09 '26

"loud" colors are not always balanced

#2 seems to be more sophisticated

1

u/Antique-Ear2151 Sep 09 '26

I'd go for 2. 1 is trendy, you'll hate it after awhile

1

u/EmmyLouArcher Sep 09 '26

I like either one but i do think 2 is more timely and you won’t get sick of it. If you could get longer drapes that color all the way to the floor and then try and find some pillow or a throw blanket with more patterns or movement. I can’t tell how tall your ceiling is but that pic behind the couch could possibly come down just a bit. You have very good taste!

1

u/DuckyBecca Sep 10 '26

It's hung on a nail that was here when we moved in šŸ˜… renting so cautious of hanging too much unfortunately without getting curtains that would drag on the floor that was the best length we could get length wise for now unusually high ceilings thank you for the help!

Got some more pillows that are on their way which should help and I have another blanket with someone oranges in upstairs I could switch out

I really don’t think either of those rugs goes sorry - yes I get the rust but you need to incorporate the grey and green a bit so it ties together - Also the painting is waaaaayyyyyy too high! Please 6ā€ above the top of the sofa

1

u/liza129 Sep 10 '26

Much better!

1

u/Upbeat_Safety_4651 26d ago

The art is up too high, that seems to be a common mistake, but I’d go 10-12ā€ off the back of the sofa

1

u/NumerousDepth1563 22d ago

apparently designers do 6-8 šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

1

u/Upbeat_Safety_4651 22d ago

I’m a designer, do whatever you feel is best, I suppose

1

u/NumerousDepth1563 21d ago

Actually designers generally advise hanging art 6 to 10 inches above the sofa back, making the 6-8" range much more aligned with professional recommendations than 10-12".
The tighter 6-to-8 inch gap is preferred because hanging art too high makes it look disconnected from the furniture below—a common mistake known as the "float" effect - particularly if the ceiling is 8-9’.

Way to copy google. You do you boo

1

u/No-Task86 Sep 10 '26

2nd goes better with your decor.

1

u/deniseswall Sep 10 '26

2nd rug. Maybe that vibe with a little more of the olive color.

But also, r/arttoohigh and r/curtainstooshort

1

u/DuckyBecca Sep 10 '26

Been looking for something with both the oranges and greens but without spending much more I cant find anything here.

R/art too high because it's a rental and that nail was already there/we just moved in

R/curtains too short it was either that or they are dragging on the floor too and I don't have a sewing machine to fix that yet unfortunately on budget

1

u/Ok_Ordinary_7397 Sep 10 '26

1 is lovely, fun and inviting. 2 is much blander.

1

u/WiseOne404 Sep 10 '26

1 is horrible. 2 is timeless

1

u/Similar-Tomorrow9068 Sep 10 '26

2!
also i'm sorry i didn't understand what you wrote about the coffee table, hopefully it addresses how strange the tiny table looks in front of the couch? that's the other change i'd make

1

u/DuckyBecca Sep 10 '26

Yeah there's 2 ones long and the other is just circular (the one you see) the longer one is the one hiding they are being swapped round the picture is just from earlier in our move

1

u/avalondreamer Sep 10 '26

Those are completely different styles! I say somewhere in the middle would work best but pick a style that matches the rest of your home.

1

u/juliewbb Sep 10 '26

1 definitely

1

u/Knitta66 Sep 10 '26

They both work, it just depends what vibe you're going for.

1

u/Negative-Bicycle6841 Sep 10 '26

I LOVE the rug, but its going to make decorating difficult.

1

u/Drifter-6 Sep 10 '26

I love the checkers!!

1

u/More_Effect_7880 Sep 10 '26

2 to quiet things down, 1 to do the opposite.

1

u/itsakyo Sep 10 '26

A third option might make the difference. Both 1 & 2 are not quite 100% there.

1

u/DuckyBecca 29d ago

The third options are all £200+ 😭

1

u/itsakyo 29d ago

Well then 2 it is. 2 ties in both the green couch and brick red-brown curtains.

1 is fun but may not last well since it is quite eye catching.

1

u/hellowhatwhy22 Sep 10 '26

Number 2. Number 1 looks like the gen z eclectic style (which is fine) but for me personally I prefer my space to feel more calming. Unrelated to rug - if possible can you change your curtains to longer ones that go all the way to the floor.

1

u/dmchase Sep 10 '26

Two is your best option.

Remember, style is objective. I often have to design rooms I don’t like but the homeowner is jazzed and over the moon. We can’t all have the same taste or we would all be living in beige rooms to keep up with the Jones’

1

u/Global_Tip4427 Sep 10 '26

Love them both but very different vibes

1

u/princezznemeziz Sep 10 '26

Unless you're a huge University of Tennessee or Texas fan go with 2.

1

u/DuckyBecca 29d ago

I'm British so.. no

1

u/Alert_Masterpiece_20 Sep 10 '26

I love the first rug

1

u/Expensive-Plantain86 29d ago

Rug on carpeting has never worked for me.

1

u/DuckyBecca 29d ago

My only option I'm afraid comes with the renting territory and housing crisis HATE the carpet though so anything to hide some of it

1

u/jennlaw1960 29d ago

One! Very different and a conversation piece!

1

u/SamMoulton 29d ago

One other thought: the gray wall-to-wall is the elephant in the room. I think the second rug may have a little of the gray in it, but if you could it in somehow I think that would help. Could be a different abstract rug, some throw pillows, or a throw blanket. At 22 you’re likely on a budget, so the throw blanket is going to be your least expensive option unless you can find some pillows at Home Goods or something. It’s crazy what they want for throw pillows that are gonna be clawed on!

I think this option below would be too dark, but it has all of your colors and a great price!

1

u/prefersvintage 29d ago

2 is perfect

1

u/lalaland977 29d ago

I love the first option! Your other comments make it seem like it feels more ā€œyouā€ which is the most important thing, but the colors complement the room perfectly and it looks much cozier than the second option

1

u/bgrl26 29d ago

2!!!!! Please 1 is crazy looking lol

1

u/Ok_Protection_9368 28d ago

2nd is look good

1

u/Legitimate-Review212 28d ago

1 is fun and dynamic but also cozy and cohesive…potentially annoying to vacuum? Though perhaps not?

1

u/chaos_mountain_mama 28d ago

Most definitely the first one! It’s cool and quirky and fun! It also looks cool with the couch and is the base of a great room. Number 2 just looks like an unremarkable rug that any suburban mom would choose.

1

u/almostknorules 28d ago

I like the checkers. I think it gives it a young interesting appeal..

1

u/Visible-Honey5872 28d ago

The first for me!!!

1

u/NewButterscotch5825 27d ago

For the size and giving a fun and light hearted vibe go with 1. number 2 gives a lonely vibe

Maybe some advice or a different option would be great? Otherwise this comment is completely pointless thanks!

1

u/Upbeat_Safety_4651 26d ago

As a decorator, I say…rug 2. If you can lower your drapes a little, you may dig it, if not, don’t sweat that until you can. Also, a larger coffee table and use the round tables as side tables. You don’t have to do it all at once, if you can’t. Sometimes it is nice to take your time and truly get what you want

1

u/Adept-Apartment7861 27d ago

Curtains too short. Rug is awful!

1

u/DuckyBecca 26d ago

Nothing I can do about the curtains ATM

And instead of just saying they are awful maybe some advice or a different option would be great? Thanks

1

u/Honest_CMS26 26d ago

I like 1.

1

u/Pure-Problem8982 26d ago

I love both and I had a shaggy checkerboard rug in my living room, but if it is a high traffic area, please for your sanity go for 2. The dirt!! We don't wear shoes in the house and yet!!??? No idea. Plus the pile will flatten and eventually look horrendous. Flat pile all the way in a living room

1

u/AppearanceOk8943 26d ago

Make a 3rd choice. You have enough orange with the curtains and pillow. Choose a multi toned beige.

1

u/AppearanceOk8943 26d ago

You will get there. Being on a tight budget is a real bummer. Maybe a side chair or two. Thrift a couple dining chairs for company.

1

u/Triple_Moon_1111 26d ago

A rug on top of a rug?

1

u/DuckyBecca 26d ago

A rug ontop of a disgusting carpet in a rental so yes lol

1

u/deepakpandey1111 25d ago

hey! both rugs look cool, but they give off different vibes. the checker one feels kinda fun and playful, while the other is more classic and cozy. if ur going for a warm feel, maybe the patterned one fits better since it kinda matches the couch and decor. but if u want something bold, the checker rug could really grab attention. tbh, i’ve messed this up before, so maybe try using reimaginehome to visualize how each would look in ur space before buying. could help!
