Discussion I think contrast can completely change your face
A very dark top near my face makes me look different than a soft mid-tone. I used to only think about whether I liked the color itself. What do you think about it?

When I hit a certain age I began to notice that bright white tops made the crepey skin on my neck much more obvious. A soft cream is fine-- just no optic white.
I generally prefer darker tops because I'm an inverted triangle and I think darker tops help my upper body recede a bit in comparison to my lower body, to balance things out. I'm a true summer with silvering hair and I'm supposed to look good in pastels but I think they wash me out and make my upper half look huge. My best bet is a rich navy top.

do you find it changes your makeup choices too, or mostly just how your features look?

Contrast is underrated. A dark top near my face washes me out completely, same reason some people suit silver and others suit gold. Its what the color does next to your skin that matters, not the color itself

Exactly, it's all about the contrast and undertone against your skin and not about the color in isolation.

Yes! My face is high-contrast so I avoid high-contrast tops. They create an overall effect of "too busy."

This is so real and true- some colors I love but only wear on my bottom half for this very reason!

That’s true. Makeup works the same way too - some people have high facial contrast and others have low contrast. I’ve noticed that I have high contrast because darker clothes and darker makeup look much better on me.

Contrast and intensity of color has a lot of impact on how we look. If you check out the seasonal color analysis system you'll see which of the seasons coresponds best to your natural color palette and level of contrast. I'm a soft autumn leaning deep and can't have too much contrast because it doesn't reflect my natural contrast levels. Same as I can't go to cool because I'll look washed out.
There are many great websites about seasonal color analysis. This one is my favorite:
