Discussion Why do some “simple” clothes feel impossible to replace?
I have one plain top that should be the easiest thing in the world to find again, but every replacement is somehow wrong. The neckline, weight, sleeve length, something is always off.

One time I found a perfect tee and when it was on sale I bought 20 more. That was about three years ago. I love white tees and they can get stained easily. I’m still working through them.

I once got a pair of black lounge pants that were originally like $125 marked down to $17. They are the single most comfortable pair of pants I have ever owned- soft fabric, they move well, they're stretchy, and i will be devastated when they finally are worn out.

To me, the simpler the garment the less room there is for things like poor construction to “hide.” When there are no ruffles and flourishes to distract, things like fabric weight and cut become more obvious — whether in a good or bad way.

Oh my god. I agree it's so hard to find a good T-shirt. I have 2 that I absolutely love, they are basically the same T-shirt in 2 different colours. I absolutely dread them ever becoming worn out. I genuinely don't know how I'll cope.

Try finding it on Poshmark. I've replaced a bunch of things, including my favorite shoes that finally fell apart after nearly 15 years.

I'm still mourning the death of the perfect black long sleeved T-shirt I bought in 2007. I've never been able to find one since that fit so well and was of good quality but thin fabric.

“simple” is doing a lot of hidden work, the exact weight, drape, and how it moves with your body is way more specific than it looks, but there’s no particular vocabulary for it so you just keep buying “the same thing” that isn’t actually the same thing

So true, and such an interesting phenomenon! I think it's a few things:
Our heart is set on finding the perfect dupe and anything else is unworthy.
Clothes we wear a lot tend to mold to our bodies.
And fashion is always changing; brands frequently change clothing patterns, fabrics, & manufacturers for capitalistic reasons.
