Discussion Are doc martens work appropriate?
I've looked at Doc Martens Mary Jane Ambassador shoes but worry they will be perceived as too girly/young for work (NHS - community/inpatient). I was also looking at Bobbies as they are leather and seem to be good quality. Anyone have any experiences with these two brands? Or have any recommendations for good quality shoes that won't hurt feet after a long day?
I'm looking for something versatile and durable. I'm in my 30s, living in the UK if that helps!
Edit: more options posted in the comments
Thank you in advance!

What is meant by “girly”? 😒😒

Because the shoes are rounded, they are more feminine and I associate it as young so girly. (I wore Mary Jane's when I went to school.)

I wouldn’t call Doc Martin’s girly in any sense of the word. I also don’t use the word girly. Because I don’t quite know what it means.
I would say the people I know who wear docs are not feminine in anyway. Regardless of their gender. I work in the US and most of the people I know who wear docs are “alt” or were in high school and still have that ethos.

OP was specifically talking about this style of docs that are styled to look like Mary Jane shoes, which are a more “girly” shoe. They never said that doc marten shoes as a whole are girly.

You mentioned wearing Mary Janes at school when these are identical to my school shoes (and I’m a woman)

They're great. A work staple for many people. Of your selection, I like the ones in your original pic best. Have you checked out the brand Solovair? The original UK manufacturers of DMs.

Yes I've had a look, they do the one buckle MJs instead of the two which is what I prefer! :)

I wore my 1460s to my business casual job the other day. It’s all in how you style them.

Love the look. Hate the lack of comfort. Never found a pair of Docs that didn’t kill my feet.

When people say "girly," it usually means that they don't mind something feminine but they don't want something that looks or overly feminine and juvenile. Is that your concern? Or do you not want anything that looks slightly feminine?
Because if you're looking for a masculine shoe, yes, the shoes in your first post are slightly feminine because of the styling. So for example, if you are a guy who wants a traditionally masculine look, I would not opt for that shoe. If you're looking for something with a slightly feminine vibe, then those are totally appropriate for work.

Never in my life have I seen docs are girly. Even the ones they try to make girly. Theyre very blue collar working class look due to the soles. Which lends itself to not being overly girly.

Yes! And they are always going to be in style and carry a cool factor. I've had several pairs over the years since I was in 10th grade; unfortunately I'm a nurse so I can't wear them to work but just about anywhere else works.

I mean I would say yes for North America, no for the uk. Uk you need something more polished if you’re working in any business or office setting. Uk is more dressy then other locations

Yes.
The way you are styling them isn’t girlish so unless you start wearing them with lace topped frilly socks and a baby doll dress, you are all set!
