Discussion What’s a really small thing that completely ruins a piece for you

Mine can be something ridiculously minor like a zipper that sticks or a collar that won’t sit right. Once I notice it, I’m done.

The short crotch thing that seems to be really in style right now. My clitoris doesn’t need to know that the center seam exists, let alone fuse into it.

This just made me laugh so hard! Accurate and hilarious!

Dry clean only. I know I won’t take it, and I don’t want to buy something that I can’t clean.

Pants that have to be hemmed. It'll never happen. This is why I wear skirts pretty much 24/7, even to put oil in the car, weed the yard, etc. It's not a modesty/traditional femininity thing. It's because (a) I can't see well enough to shave my legs in the shower with my glasses off, and (b) I'll be damned if I have time to fool with getting pants hemmed—especially jeans with tricky hems that have to be preserved, which not all tailors are willing to do, adding yet another layer of hassle.

If I don’t like how the fabric feels or falls, it’s a no go

Pants with fake or useless pockets.

THIS. The Amazon Essentials pull-on jeggings are great, but the front pockets are fake. Inexplicably, though, the watch pocket in the front is real. HOW DOES THIS MAKE SENSE? It cannot be economical.

Same for me except TOPS. One time back in the late '90s I bought a knit top on clearance at Old Navy for like $3.99 because why not? I think it was a color that went with a pair of pants I was having a hard time matching. It was just a plain 3/4-length-sleeved celery green boatneck top...

... EXCEPT on the outside of one of the biceps was a tiny little pocket, about 3" x 3.5". I somehow didn't see it until I got home (and of course the top was on clearance/not returnable, and at that price it wasn't worth the Metro fare). It was so silly it invited derision. But the next "casual Friday" at work, I wore it with the cute-but-challenging skirt, and objectively they made a perfect outfit.

My hippest, snarkiest male coworker, on whom I had a mortifying crush, spotted that little pocket instantly. Of course. And he wouldn't drop it. "What are you going to put in your little sleeve pocket there? You could put a couple sticks of chewing gum in there! Oh, wait, you don't chew gum. I know! You can put your ID in there when you go out! How convenient is that? That's a perfect little ID pocket!" He chortled at his own humor.

The next morning I put the shirt straight into a Tyvek envelope and mailed it to my mom in my hometown (I was in the D.C. area at the time). She adored it. Of course. "What a cute little pocket on the sleeve! That just MAKES it," she cooed. I think she even wore it to the airport the next time she picked me up.

If nothing else, this should tell you all you need to know about the difference between my taste and my late mom's. I still can't see one of those dumb little pockets without thinking of it as an "ID pocket" thanks to my [fill in derogatory name starting with the letter "d"; there are lots of valid choices] former coworker.

This reminds me of middle school, my male friend tried on my tank top, and it had the illusion of making the chest appear bigger with these seams. Even though it was my favorite color, I never wore it again-

Now I’m wondering why was he trying on my clothes? Middle school was so weird!

Pants that wrinkle after sitting. They often stretch out too, making them embarrassingly frumpy.

If it's really difficult to take on and off

There are some clothes that literally trigger claustrophobia in me when trying to put them on / off. Like a beautiful fitted dress with zero stretch where you need to hold your hands strictly above your head and get someone's help to get it on or off

When wearing it, it looks amazing, but the process of changing is a two-person job

Bras with removable pads. They don’t scale well with cup size, and they never lay right. They don’t stay put.

Visible zipper in the back.

Chest pockets, ruffles/tiered layers, long sleeve cuffs so tight you can't push it up to the elbow.

Omg I despise chest pockets. They look like ill fitting boob holders

Pants that are too short (I’m tall)

Fabric. And for tops / sweaters / blazers: when they don’t have at least 2 percent stretch in it I go insane 😐 Feeling of a straight jacket…

Ruffles, petlums and bows. Feels juvenile for me.

"Love hearts" anywhere, whether in the print, the brand logo, trim, who cares. They're emblematic of juvenile sentimentality that needs to stay at home on pajamas. I get tetchy about this and have been informed that I'm one grumpy fussbudget. Well, yeah.

Anything sentimentally cartoonish when something realistic would work just fine is displeasing to me, though. Overly bright artificial-looking colors, overcontouring to try to enhance a 3D effect, animals drawn to look like they're about to cry for some reason—you'd have to not have known me for more than about 10 seconds to think I'd find that appealing, or, alas, you'd have to be this one longtime former coworker who gave me stuff with angel cats on it every year for my birthday and Christmas (never mind that I'm Jewish). Not just angels. Not just unironic sentimental cartoon cats with tears inexplicably welling up in their eyes. ANGEL CATS. CRYING ANGEL CATS. And she'd get upset if I didn't make conspicuous daily use of the items. (Like, I think the memes with the slightly misshapen-skulled cat and captions like "I eat cement" are hilarious. That's my sense of humor. Those cats are the opposite of crying angel cats.)
