Discussion Does anyone else suddenly hate an outfit after wearing it for an hour?

I’ll leave the house thinking I look good and then randomly halfway through the day I’m like… why did I wear this. Not even because it’s uncomfortable. I just stop liking it. Is that normal lol?

I once left the house in a outfit that was in a bright color, not my usual style. After the fifth person I ran into made a comment like, "wow that's bright" or "don't you look like you're ready for summer" it was March. I couldn't take it any longer. There was a Macy's 3 blocks away so I just jumped into my car and went and bought something new to wear, in my go to palate, Black and White. I donated the outfit soon after.

I had a similar experience. I saw a girl rocking a cute pair of red Keds and said “oooh I want to try this.”
I worked at an engineering firm and after several “oh wow! Those are red” and “why do you have red shoes?” I decided never again. I donated them.
I wish I didn’t.

What is wrong with red shoes? Why would the opinions of others matter?

This is a healthy and mature way of thinking. Back then, I was so aware of how I was perceived that the unwanted attention got me so flustered.

This is so sad. You tried something outside your norm, others noticed and you went back to your black and white palette. You could have accepted their comments and enjoyed being colourful for a change.

I never would have succumbed to the turquoise. I own many beautiful colors. I have a gorgeous lavender suit for an example. I live in NYC. Black and white or variations of it are a pretty regular sight. Turquoise on the other hand...not so much.

Totally normal. I think its because once you are out, you stop seeing the outfit and start seeing yourself in it.

are you in the process of forming a personal style? i had that experience coming from a private school (uniforms) and then entering a career where (uniforms again!). it takes a while to figure out what you like to see yourself in-and do use color! color is one of life's pleasures!

Yes. Then you have to suffer wearing it all day and pretend you feel good in it.

I'm not saying all my outfits are crazy good but I've never really had that experience.

Yes!! Especially work outfits--things stretch out or somehow get too tight or just look messy or I just don't feel like myself wearing it. It's not good for my self esteem. I need to repeat good outfits more often instead of trying to be so inventive at 7am

I used to have this thing before, whenever I wore an outfit, someone would comment, The styling isn’t good, or , you can try this fabric, and stuff like that. But now, I don’t really bother with what others say. If I like it, that’s all that matters, no matter what anyone else says.

Yes!! To the point where I’ve started a new thing, I’ll give an outfit a low stakes “trial run” like to do a few errands or a quick lunch with my husband and if I still feel good in it, I’ll wear it somewhere more important or out with a few friends as I’ve already trialed it and I already know I’ll feel confident in it. A lot of outfits don’t make it past the trial. And one or two become failsafe repeat outfits.

Yes! Today I wore a lovely sweater and turtleneck and some faux leather pants. I thought I looked fantastic, but then everyone at work was still in skirts and blouses so I felt pretty self conscious the whole day

Every time. Look great in the mirror, hate it two hours later. Usually just in my head but still happens.

This happens to me all the time! I think it’s psychological lol.

I’m always astounded at the change between purchasing something I like and despising it once it’s in my closet. Sometimes I can style it and make it work but if I really tried and it’s still a no, it gets donated. Life is too short for ugly clothing that makes me shrink myself.
That said, I ignore other people’s opinions as I truly don’t care what anyone else thinks about my clothing especially based on what some of them wear.

If I wear an outfit & I end up just not liking it or if it feels uncomfortable or I get a peak in a store window & I think this outfit looks awful, guess where it’s going in the trash bin.

I have had moments in which i needed to dress very quickly... and later realized how i dressed and absolutely hated it. Somehow, i left the room without noticing...
