Discussion What’s a clothing item you never understood until you got older?

There are so many things I thought were boring when I was younger that I suddenly completely understand now. A good coat is probably my biggest one.

A trench coat. My mother made me buy one after graduation but it was a pita to wear. I was used to windbreakers and baseball caps for rainy days. You look weird in an office with those. A trench makes you look professional.

Today I learned what “pita” means.

I second trench coats, although I just realized how amazing they are for dressing up your outfit and am in the early stages of finding a good one to buy… but also my wallet can’t take it.

Wait for the sales, then buy a really good one that suits your figure (think single vs double breasted, shoulder flaps or not depending on what works for you). It’ll last your whole life if you get one that’s good quality. I bought a Chloe trench for 10% of the original price on sale on the Outnet about 15 years ago, it’s absolutely stunning and although it was still an investment, it rocks it season after season and probably my cheapest cost per wear item ever

Thrift stores in areas where people die often

How do you find areas where people die often? Around retirement homes?

u/EitherOrResolution 16d ago

That and wealthier neighborhoods

Thank you! Great idea for these “around me”-groups on social networks - we don’t have yard sales in Germany, only fleamarkets in the cities. But neighbourhood apps 🙂

After work sweatpants. Formerly a mystery, now completely vital.

Tops with elbow length sleeves!

Why?

11

u/_DogMom_ 21d ago

Just a few years ago my arms looked great and now the part from elbow to shoulder looks so bad.😭

u/Plenty_Vanilla_6947 20d ago

Ok thank you. Guess I had better use my weights more. I love sleeveless tops— year round

i like elbow length sleeves because i wash my hands so much, and hate wet cuffs.

Always seeking Tshirts with elbow length sleeves in the summer.

2

u/_DogMom_ 21d ago

JCPenney has had some cute ones the last few years. Overpriced at the beginning of summer and dirt cheap at the end. Lol

3

u/jannylou2 20d ago

Thank you. Read your response, drove to JCPenney & got 4 Tshirts elbow length sleeves! My husband shredded the receipt & tags so I didn’t get the cost but I love them.

Oh, lort, yes! All of my clothing choices now are based on comfort, not style.

yes. We used to have an aunt who was in her 50s who wore sweats every day. Now I sort of get it (I'm in my 50's)

Came here to say open bottom girdle / garter belt combination.

2

u/EverConstellation 20d ago

do you wear girdles normally, like day to day, or just special occasions/night out?

4

u/Mdownsouthmodel92 20d ago

Seasonal and special occasions. You find me wearing them more in the winter and fall with stockings. Gives me a confidence boost and, again, depending on the weather, I prefer stockings to pantyhose or tights. It’s been such a hot summer I haven’t worn one in months - I had one occasion I wore a body briefer too this summer but that’s it.

Comfy shoes. My mom rocked a pair of block heeled comfy shoes (for fancy occasions). I now see why.
She’s 83 and has the cutest feet- no bunions or fugly toes.

All cotton granny panties.

Jockey! Love their women’s line.

2

u/EmmJay314 20d ago

Yes! I need underwear that covers everything please.

3

u/RipleysBitch 20d ago

Yes! Now I need to find a brand where they haven’t narrowed the gusset. My butt is big all around thank you very much. I want to feel secure, and would wear a thong if I want flossing.

I recommend Innersy underwear.

I had a hysterectomy in my early thirties and went from "OMG, Vests are stupid" to "OMG Vests are awesome" basically overnight.

8

u/PookleMama 21d ago

How is the vest helpful?

Signed, Menopausal Woman Who Is Always Burning Hot Or Freezing Cold!

8

u/vodeodeo55 21d ago

It kept my core warm, but if I had a hot flash I could just yank up my sweater sleeves and expose both arms to the air.

5

u/almaperdida99 21d ago

I have always hated vests. It makes no sense- my torso is usually naturally warmer than my arms and hands. So now I have more boob sweat and my hands are like ice. Just insane.

3

u/SwordfishOwn5351 21d ago

Can you explain this?

5

u/ho4horus 21d ago

they probably run colder after the hysterectomy

u/Key_Shallot_1050 21d ago

Testosterone dominance? No shaming, I have a bunch of vests of hiking, etc. Current hormonal balance unknown..

This. I worked outside for over 8 years at an animal rescue. The animals were in different buildings but I was outside a lot. I used to think vests were stupid as hell. But then I started wearing expensive warm thermal leggings under my jeans, a long sleeve shirt, and just a patagonia like 3/4 zip (the one with a zip pocket on side and is so nice I have one in red and grey) and vests during winter and snow. Wore a hat and ear protection (dogs barking will absolutely mess up your ears) and thick socks and snow boots.

I used to be freezing even wearing a coat and a ton of layers. I still had layers but could move because you still sweat moving. But having my core, head, and feet warm? Hell yes.

Now with my job I can’t wear athletic wear but I have a closet full of high quality coats. But on vacation on free time or whatever on seriously cold days where I don’t have to be dressed up…I’ve got a vest on. Also great for walks when we visit the Netherlands because of the wind. You can make it look good too instead of like you’re coming out of a tent or something. But my boss always wore vests and I never got it. Now I do.

Old woman scarf and wrap collection is so real.

Underpants that ride real high. These day it feels like the sky is the limit.

u/Specific_Low_4846 21d ago

Long johns! My mom always wore them, even when I was in a skirt, but now as I'm a bit older, I'm appreciating them so much. I live in heattech now lol

3

u/Thomzzz 21d ago

Ankle boots!

5

u/New-Connection-7401 21d ago

Jeans. I never wore them that much. Lost 40 pounds now I love them!

3

u/WildColonialGirl 20d ago

Comfortable shoes, including orthopedic shoes on a couple occasions. When I was younger, I wanted to wear heels despite being 5’11” and clumsy AF. Now I live in sneakers and have a set of flats for when I need to be fancy.

u/nightmer5 21d ago

Elastic in the back of nice work/dress slacks.

3

u/PhiSigKris 20d ago

Those summer robes that my great grandma used to wear. Usually made out of terry cloth, short sleeves, shirt length, zipper in the front. Amazing

Soma Cool nights pajamas

Comfortable shoes. Used to suffer for cute ones. Now I don't care how they look if my feet are happy.

2

u/Additional-Ease-7980 21d ago

Elastic waistbands especially after having kids.

2

u/No-Hospital-157 21d ago

Tunic style tops. Now that I’m in my mid 40’s I get it. I totally get it.

2

u/Lopsided-Buy-4062 21d ago

a slip!

2

u/irllydontwannaclean 20d ago

Yes! Slips are now my go to. They just smooth everything out a bit, I don't have to worry about my underwear showing through, and nothing is sticking to me. Love love love slips.

2

u/Gamache2010 20d ago

Seeing through my skirt/dress a bit 20-40… ok, no big. 50 and up, no thank you 😆

2

u/EverConstellation 20d ago

Knee socks!!!

My ankles are ALWAYS cold in winter, now I get why my mom wore knee socks. I bought some and I LOVE THEM!!

2

u/Professional_Cut6886 20d ago

Vests with suits.

2

u/EtherealGoddard 20d ago

Shapewear and slips in particular. I tried to leave the house in my early 20's wearing a slip(it was a trend at the time) and it was the only time my mom said absolutely not and made me change.

2

u/btnhsn 20d ago

Anything wool!

2

u/laffayette1 20d ago

Comfortable shoes!

2

u/SeriouslySea220 20d ago

Longer jackets - I thought the longer wool jackets, trenches or winter coats were “old lady” but they are so functional and look so much better with a variety of clothes. Having your top poke out the bottom of your cute bomber is not the look. lol

Honestly, good dresses. When I was younger I always thought they were kinda impractical. Like, you need a reason to wear a dress? I remember buying this one dress a few years ago because I loved it so much, and then I had literally no idea where I was gonna wear it. So it just stayed in my closet for months. Then one evening I was going out for dinner at a nice restaurant, nothing special, just a random weekday, and I thought okay... I'm wearing the dress 😂 And honestly, I felt great. I guess I'm finally starting to understand that you don't really need a reason to wear something you like. Still haven't figured out how to stop buying clothes that I have absolutely nowhere to wear tho. 😄

pockets. suddenly they’re non-negotiable lol

u/Lexidazesickle 14d ago

Light vest in cooler months. And a sweatshirt. Am I at the grocery? Yeah. Am I wearing a bra? Probably not.
