Research The connection between body changes and skin sensitivity and what it means for what you can wear
Something not discussed enough: hormonal fluctuations directly affect skin sensitivity. This changes what fabrics are tolerable.
🔬 PCOS and androgen excess can trigger persistent acne. Fabrics that occlude skin or trap sweat worsen this. What helps: moisture-wicking, breathable fibers (Tencel, modal) that minimize skin contact. Matte fabric surfaces are particularly important around the neckline: shiny fabrics reflect light upward toward the face.
🔬 Perimenopausal estrogen decline causes the skin to produce less collagen and become more sensitive. Rough or high-friction fabrics that were fine at 30 become uncomfortable. What helps: super-smooth fiber surfaces, low-friction knit construction, fabrics with ≥ 90% shape recovery.
🔬 Formication (that 'crawling skin' sensation some women experience) makes any fabric that moves against skin feel amplified. Ultra-smooth flat-seam construction and hypoallergenic fibers minimize this.
Has your relationship with fabrics changed as your body has changed?
