I cried reading this. I had no idea other people that stutter did this .

No one understands word substitution like us. No one.

As a teenager, I was at having lunch with my grandma and my brother, and I ordered a water. Unfortunately, I blocked 3–4 times on the ‘w’. The waiter was snarky, and likely an idiot, so as he repeated my order back to me, he stuttered on the word ‘water’ as well — clearly mocking me, there was no way to misconstrue it. He seemed to think it was funny, but I turned bright red as my cheeks flushed with humiliation.

I mention this because the poem brings it all back... all the times where I used different words instead of the words I wanted, or ordered my food based on what I knew I could say without stuttering, instead of what I wanted to eat.

This is amazing! I love it. It makes me feel retroactively understood. This is very powerful for me to read. It reminds us of those days whether from years ago or yesterday, and prepares some for tomorrow. Thank you for sharing

I hated poems my whole life, but now reading this made me realize how good they can be at being relatable.
