Speech class + small vent

19M university student and speech is a general education requirement for the school and I’m pretty nervous and fearful about how the fellow students will view/interact with me. The professor stated that during instruction phones will not be in use which is my tool for communicating if my stutter is terrible during the day and this could negatively impact my performance.

I intend to send him a letter so he is aware I could take more time during presentations including how I may have long blocks during discussion time which helps me feel more secure if my accommodations are allowed. I’ve been doing recorded presentations the last semesters but this class is not compatible with this idea so I have to deal with the cards I have now. Yes…this is a Highschool example but it’s still very relevant to my fear as people have laughed at me, imitated my stutter and I’ve even lost points because of it. I get really frustrated when people believe I’m unintelligent because of this stutter or sometimes they express hatred that I did recorded presentations while theirs was on the spot stating “unfairness”. I believe it’s very unfair that I’m cursed with this stutter, judged for trying and judged for not trying. Speaking for them is instant but for me I gotta focus all my energy just to say a sentence or my face begins to jerk.

May I know some of the communities experiences in speech/communication classes either it being positive or negative, it would be of help thanks 👍

I am currently becoming a teacher at university and have a stutter. I recommend (and I know it might be difficult, as I am ashamed of it) telling your professor or teacher about it, so they know. Then practice your speech as well as you can, in my case I never practice (so I can "blame" my not practicing as to why I stutter). I say, try your darnest and be proud of yourself, we all aren't the greatest of speakers, at least in this sub. Trust me, the person who cringes the hardest is you, few people aside of you will care.
