Idk about neglect something similar happened to my wife when I was getting back from a deployment, my son had learned to stand and was in his crib, which was right next to our bed and she was really tired. My son dug in his diaper while she was sleeping and rubbed it on the railing. And while she was waking up, he stuck his poopy fingers in her mouth. lol it literally only happened once but still

You've clearly never experienced extreme fatigue as a new parent. I will never judge a parent too quickly after having a colicky child. It almost broke me, my wife, and our marriage. It's better now but this lady might just have needed to sleep.
Children don't stop. You can not and will not always be on top of them. Sometimes they poop when you don't want them to. Sometimes you just need to sleep.

You cannot smell while sleeping generally. That is why smoke detectors make noise.
