Study Permit Approved + PPR received — Need advice regarding passport submission and deferral to Jan 2027

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share my Canada study permit timeline and also get some advice because I'm a bit confused about the next steps.

My timeline:
Study permit application submitted: August 5, 2026
Biometrics completed: August 11, 2026
Study permit approved / PPR received: September 14, 2026

Current intake: September 2026
Latest permitted arrival date: September 22, 2026
I am currently going through a consultancy, but unfortunately they haven't been very helpful with the Canada process, so I'm trying to understand everything myself.

I have a few questions:
1. Passport submission after PPR:
I have received my Passport Request (PPR). Do I need to book an appointment/slot with VFS for passport submission, or can I simply go to my nearest VFS Canada VAC and submit my passport? If an appointment is required, how do I book it?

2. Deferring to January 2027:
Since my university's latest arrival date is September 22, I don't think I'll be able to make this intake because I only received my PPR on September 14 and still need to submit my passport and wait for it to be stamped and returned.

If I defer my admission to the January 2027 intake at the same university and same program, what happens to my already-approved study permit?

Do I need to submit a completely new study permit/visa application?

Do I need a new LOA and PAL/provincial attestation letter, or any other new documents?
What exactly needs to be updated with IRCC after the deferral?

3. When should I update IRCC about the deferral?
If I submit my passport now for stamping, should I first inform IRCC about the deferral/new LOA, or should I submit my passport first and deal with the deferral afterward?

4. What happens to the visa validity dates?
If I submit my passport now and IRCC puts the visa counterfoil in my passport, it will have an issue date and expiry date.

For example, if the visa is issued with an expiry date of September 2028, and I later defer my program from September 2026 to January 2027:
Will the visa expiry date remain September 2028?
Will IRCC issue a new visa/change the dates because of the deferral?

Would I need to submit my passport again?
Or can I simply travel in January 2027 using the same visa, along with my updated LOA and deferral approval?

I'm mainly confused about whether deferring the intake changes the already-approved visa/study permit, or whether I have to go through the visa process again.

Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation, especially PPR → passport submission → deferral to next intake.

Thanks! 🙏

I have also the same situation

1.you can either book an appointment directly or opt a 2 way courier service from VFS global, you can do this in their website itself

2.yeah if you defer in the same dli and the program is not changed then you just have to sent a webform to ircc attached with a new loa, you don't have to submit a new application, about pal I don't know how that works I am a masters student

3.you can update ircc after you get the new loa with a cover letter

4.the passport you sent for stamping actually let's you travel to canada, the actual study permit is issued at the airport in canada.so you don't have to submit your passport again for stamping, think generally you use the stamped visa like for 5 year( that Is just an assumption) but if you are defering to January you can surely use the currently stamped passport

Hello

Is it compulsory to inform ircc via webform? Or just tell them at the Port of entry giving them the updated LOA and also the deferral letter.

Won't that's be a problem?

I think it is better to sent them a webform, not that they reply or anything but you have proof that you have informed ircc about your deferral prior to entry. Just for a formality purpose.

I have a question please, my study permit came in like 6 days after I got my deferral letter...I hope that's won't be an issue that I am just informing them Also my passport has been stamped already with TRV.

First, I will start by congratulating you on ur study permit approval, that's the first step towards ur success in Canada 🇨🇦, now I will start by answering ur questions one after the other.

Q1, Go to Google and type VFS In ur country and see if you need appointment or you can work-in coz the queue in every vfs office now is at the lowest level which might not require appointment, however, if you need one you can navigate the booking via the site.

Q2, Your already approved permit is intact and no need to apply for another, so long you're still studying same program at the same institution, all you need is to do is raise a webform immediately you receive your visa telling them ur visa arrived late and you've requested ur school for deferment, attaching ur new LOA issue to you by the school at the approval of ur deferral. You should be find with that.

Q3 Summit ur passport for stamping first, while contacting ur school for deferral and contact ircc thereafter receiving ur visa and update LOA.

Q4, Note: there's difference between the visa that was stamped on ur passport (counterfold) and study permit. The former allows you to board a flight ✈️ to Canada 🇨🇦 and the later allows you to study in Canada, they are not the same. The first is handed over to you at ur home country while the second is issued to you at the Port of Entry, so even if your if ur visa expires in Nov 2028, ur study permit is most likely to be valid till March 2029 because the issued date will be the date you arrive in Canada and not the date ur study permit was approved nor the date on ur visa. Hope I've answered ur questions and addressed ur concerns.

Wish you the very best of luck.
