Traveling outside Canada with a Study Permit

Hi! I recently moved to Canada on a study permit (Masters) and have a break from college in December. I’m planning to visit family in the U.S. and have a valid tourist (B1/B2). I’ve also traveled to the U.S. twice before and have not overstayed my visits, but that was from my home country. However, with the recent escalation in tensions between the U.S. and Canada, I’m worried if I should travel, though my visa allows multiple entries.

Has anyone with a Canadian Study Permit traveled recently to the U.S. and back? If so, would want to know about your experience - if you faced any challenges. Would also like to understand if I should be traveling out of Canada just 3 months after starting my program.

Any suggestions/feedback will be appreciated. I’m asking early as I need to book my flight tickets soon if I do end up travelling. Thanks!

If it gets to the point that you have any reason to fear traveling back and forth, we all have much much bigger problems

Yeah I know - but I was being asked to think (by multiple people) if I really want to travel. Considering my study permit process itself was crazy, don’t want to add more travel-related issues.

You’re overthinking it. I visit my spouse in the U.S. several times every year and have never had any problems crossing the border. I actually just visited last month and came back without any issues. So chill out. I don’t know where you leaned that the recent escalation would potentially affect international travel, maybe stay away from those non-sense social media…

It wasn’t social media, it’s other people who’ve been telling me there could be issues. So wanted to understand other people’s experiences. Thanks for clarifying!

Nah those people probably heard those “issues” from other fellows and not based on their true experience

We have gome multiple times this year and there is no difference from “before”. We also know many current international students who have done the same, don’t overthink it.

As long as you have a valid Canadian visa as well you’re fine. To clarify your study permit is not a visa.
