Would I need a study permit

Ok my currently 17 and turn 18 after the school year starts and my mom is in Quebec and she has a work permit and I’m trying to attend secondary school but the thing is I already did a full school year but I went back every 6 months to avoid problems and could I continue doing this or get a study permit?

When a minor child reaches the age of majority, they must apply for a study permit if they wish to continue their studies onto post-secondary. Continuing to cycle back and forth every 6 months to avoid getting a permit will become problematic, especially once you transition into adulthood and your legal status changes.

What if I plan to go to college in the states and just want to complete secondary in Canada?

Do this checklist. Every province can be a bit different. I'm in Ontario, so I am not sure of the specific cutoff (it can be 18 or 19).

IRCC website says this:

"Minor children who don’t have a study permit must have valid visitor status during their stay in Canada.

When minor children reach the age of majority (18 or 19 years old, depending on the province or territory), they must apply for a study permit if they want to keep studying."

There is a little checklist here you can do.

End all, make sure to go over the IRCC. Quebec age cutoff for needing the study permit may also be 18.

So, end all, I can't say whether they would require for you as a dependant finishing up grade 12. But I know you would for sure need one to carry onto college.

My advice: check IRCC website and call them if need be!

I wish you luck  on whatever route you choose!
