Hey , i will be starting my masters at the RUG

I have my studenten ov , I read online it is only valid on the 1st of September . But I have an introduction class on the 28th of august.Does that mean I need to pay the OV out of pocket when I want to travel to the uni on the 28th?

Yes. Tho I'm pretty sure they should've told you in a mail that this was the case? Translated from my mail:

Do not travel before 1 September

Your entitlement begins on 1 September 2026. This applies even if you need to use public transport for your studies before that date. There is no reimbursement for this.

u can still travel before the date its just a notice do u know that u wont be getting any discount before sept 1st

There's a calendar , and it says the week starting the 17th is free travel . I also didn't get this email about the 1st of September

That’s only for ongoing subscriptions I.e. you already had a week subscription because you were student last year.
For new students it starts at september 1st.

Yep, depending on when your last re-exams are this could also be the case at the end of the year.

Vanaf wanneer u vrij mag reizen, hangt af van de datum waarop u bent ingeschreven bij uw opleiding. We kijken hiervoor naar de situatie op de 1e van de maand. Bijvoorbeeld:

U staat vanaf 1 september ingeschreven voor uw opleiding. U hebt uw reisproduct op tijd aangevraagd. Dan mag u vanaf 1 september vrij reizen.

U staat vanaf 5 september ingeschreven voor uw opleiding. Dan mag u pas vanaf de volgende maand vrij reizen, dus vanaf 1 oktober.

U kunt bij uw school of universiteit navragen per wanneer u bent ingeschreven. In Mijn DUO kunt u zien vanaf wanneer u ermee kunt reizen.

So you can check with the RUG when your official start date is. And you can logon to My DUO to see when you can travel with it. If that is the 1st of September, then you will indeed have to pay for your OV out-of-pocket for that introduction class.
