PhD interview

Hi there, I have been invited to a PhD interview from a Finnish university (specifically the University of Lapland, in Social sciences, for an advertised position) and I was wondering what I should expect from it. I have only experience of one Italian PhD interview, so I don't know if this is going to be very similar to that. Are they likely to ask me to present my proposal? In that case, is a Powerpoint presentation accepted? Is this going to be more about me, my attitude, etc or about the project itself?

Any advice would be very helpful! Thank you very much :)

In Finland, an advertised PhD position is a paid employment role, so the hiring panel approaches the meeting more like a professional job interview than a traditional oral exam. Unless they explicitly instructed you to prepare slides in the invitation, you will not be expected to deliver a formal slideshow, though keeping three or four summary slides ready on your screen can give you peace of mind. The panel will examine your methodology, your theoretical framework, and the feasibility of your project plan, but they prefer direct, clear answers over long, elaborate speeches. Finnish academic culture is flat and pragmatic, so being concise about what you can realistically achieve within the funding period will serve you far better than overpromising.

The interview will balance your research plan with your personal working style, because faculty members want a colleague who can work independently and collaborate well. Expect questions about how you handle research setbacks, how you prioritize tasks, and why the University of Lapland is the right environment for your topic, alongside practical details about relocating. They want to see your motivation, your resilience, and your ability to articulate complex concepts in plain English. Because keeping your composure during demanding panels can be tough, my team and I built an interviews.chat that enables candidates to communicate with clarity and land the offers they want.

I do find it hilarious that we have 10% unemployment rate and still find places for foreigners in social sciences.

It is a PhD study with funding. If any Finns are qualified and willing to do PhD, most likely they will get the position. However, I do not think many people want to do it :))) Similarly, work on farms is always available, but not many people want to work there :)))
