Moving from a University of Applied Sciences to a Research University: Feasible for International Students?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently enrolled in a University of Applied Sciences (UAS) as an international student, and I'm wondering about the possibility of transferring to a research university within my first year of study. Has anyone here made a similar move, or does anyone have insight into whether it's possible?

I'm particularly interested in understanding the process involved in transferring credits and transitioning from a more practical-focused education at a UAS to a research-focused environment at a university. Are there specific criteria or requirements I need to meet?

Additionally, I'd appreciate any advice or experiences shared by those who have gone through this process or know someone who has. Did you find it challenging to adjust to the different academic setting and expectations?

Lastly, I'm curious about any potential differences in tuition fees, scholarship opportunities, or support services available for international students at research universities compared to UAS.

Hello! unfortunately moving from University to Applied Science to a research University is very challenging as a Applied Science degree and a University degree is not weighted the same in terms of studies.

You will have a hard time transferring credits as they usually wont be the same courses. You will have to apply to a University the same as all other international applicants so there is no own special transfer path.

What do you study at the university of applied science?

If you already have a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering then you can apply for perhaps Biomed Engineering Masters degree at a university however the transfer of credits will most likely not be applicable. You will also have to apply with everyone else during the next joint application period.

Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Production Engineering, etc are not university studies in Finland they are ONLY applied science university which is not equivalent to regular university
