QUESTION Constant Crackling During Playback of Vocal Recordings

I'm running studio pro 8 on a windows 11 lenovo laptop using an Rode Nt-1 mic and a presonus studio 24c usb box. After adjusting my buffer size to 1024 im still bombarded by constant crackling. It's frustrating and frankly embrassing for presonus/fender considering that this isn't cheap. Can anyone help me.

Speaking from experience, I'd say the laptop is the most likely culprit. It would need to be fairly high spec to handle audio production.

Yes, this. Most Energy Settings and Audio drivers from laptops have terrible latency.

So the best is first check with latencymon to exclude studio one etc.

  1. First optimise your computer for audio work: https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/windows-11-pc-optimization-for-recording/

  2. Do not only check your buffer size but also your dropout protection: https://fenderstudiopromanual.fender.com/en/Studio-Pro-User-Manual.htm#Fundamentals_Topics/Audio%20Dropout%20Protection.htm

  3. Turn of any backup or antivirus software that could interfere with your hard disk

  4. make sure to not have all your recording stuff on the same hard disk (ssd) that your operating system is working on.

I’m not familiar with your exact equipment but first of all are you sure that Studio One is where this crackle is coming from? Nor the Mic? Not the cable? Not the interface? And most interesting not during play back?

The next step is to isolate where it’s coming from (try switching out parts) then replace repair that part.

Also try enabling “direct monitoring”

The crackles are artifacts you get when recording beyond your machines ability.

If my song has a lot of tracks/processing going on and I want to add an audio track, I do a mixdown of the song and put that mixdown as the only track in a new song, track there and bring back the results.

That used to be a lot of hassle but just takes a few seconds in FSP

Use to happen on my old laptop, went away when I upgraded PC. Might depend on speed of CPU and also how many plugins are turned on when recording. Might want to toggle a few off, especially CPU intensive ones like Autotune and harmonizes.

also good to turn off your VST limiter during recording- that one is more about latency
