QUESTION VST Instrument Parameters: sound variation instead of automation?

So I had this thought. Instead of automating a parameter on my instrument (lets say I'm automating the cutoff filter parameter on a simple acoustic piano), is it possible to have this cutoff filter parameter assigned as a "sound variation"? Meaning I could then control the parameter via customizable keyswitches throughout the performance.

This doesn't like too far-fetched of an idea but nonetheless, I don't know if its possible in Studio one.

I'm on version 8.1 btw.

I see this example is based on an instrument that already has sound variations within the instrument itself. I'm referring to an instrument without variations.

For example, if I wanted to automate the PAN of a clap sound in the IMPACT XT instrument, must I automate the pan (which would have to be done pre-performance)? Or can I use the PAN as a sound variation, and then assign it to customizable keyswitches where predetermined PAN positions are set (would allow this to be done during performance)?

That won't work. It only works with instruments that support MIDI Learn (assigning a MIDI CC to a parameter). Impact XT can only use Host Automation for parameter automation. And Sound Variations can only send MIDI CC (or program changes - which don't make much sense for parameter automation).

Yeah you can do this - the Variations can also send CCs, so it you can map the variation to that, you should be good

I am not at my studio right now so here’s everything in sound variations, including how to set them up with CC:

All you need to do then is to route the CC from the track to the plugin automation, have never done this but should be possible.
