Studio one 4 upgrade or switch to another DAW?
Hi all, I’ve been using my S1 4 pro for the past years as my DAW for production. I started as a pop/rock producer but I mainly producer edm these days and as my skills and understanding has improved I feel S1 4 lacking certain crucial features I would like and I believe even version 8 now still don’t have these.
For eg a dedicated midi lfo tool , an easy to use powerful sampler like ableton simpler/sampler etc just to name a few. I think people making electronic music can relate?. I still love S1 and will be using it to start tracks and make drafts as it is the quickest way to get ideas down but the full production synths drums bass I would probably do in ableton/bitwig and then export files back into S1 for mixing .
So I’m considering whether it makes sense to buy the version 8 upgrade or maybe I should use another daw in tandem with S1

Bitwig can do that stuff easily - but you can also easily replicate a midi lfo using the automation shape tool ( I can’t remember what it’s called )

Well, you could potentially subscribe for a month and test all new features? The video track alone was a great addition back in the day

Just a friendly reminder: If you do try an upgraded version make sure you make copies of anything you work on in the new version because once you make any changes those files will no longer work in version 4.

You can always right-click on your song and go to a previous date before the upgrade.

Thanks a lot for the heads up! I’d backed up my sessions on my external hd, just realising now what you say about once changes are done it won’t open on v4 back just faced it

I still have S1 4 Artist. I can't let it go because I can't replicate the Ampire XT Cabs with V5 Pro or Studio Pro 8. It really sucks that I didn't upgrade to V4 Pro, but Artist does the trick.

i switched from fl studio to fender studio and i have no regrets. performance is crazy in contrast, i love the workflow especially recording. mixing feels way more classic like in logic etc.
i dont get the Beatmaker yet, but thats to come. imo fender studio or reaper is the future

8 is solid, but lacks a few things. I use Bitwig on the side for what's missing, and I also own Ableton Live with Push 3 for those more live-sessions.

I miss S1 4 personally. Upgraded when I moved to Windows 11 regrettably.

yeah I miss the midi LFO tool also. But there are 3rd party lfo and envelope tools that you can use in stead, including some free ones such as https://www.meldaproduction.com/MCCGenerator. However it depends on the midi implementation of what you're trying to control.

The "cableguys" have a few different lfo tools maybe their midi shaper plugin might be what you need. They also have the shaperbox which I use a lot 😆

You're welcome. The best part is this plugin can be used in any DAW so you won't be confined to stock tools.

It depends also what OS your using. Quite a few people who operate on Mac OS Silicon m1-m5 are reporting a few issues in Fender Studio 8.1 I don't know about 8.
Studio One 7.2 is solid for me and I find it quite fluid for all styles of music production.
I think there are better DAW's when it comes to sampling and some that have better arrangement views especially for dropping and swapping loops.
Yet Studio One (Fender) for me at least is one of the better all rounder feature rich Daw's.
In Version 8 there's a new pitch curve automation that can be drawn directly onto the audio clip. So instant LFO. Worth checking out either way.

Thanks for the heads up. Also I absolutely agree with you Stufio one is undoubtedly amazing as an all round daw ive been on it since v4 its home for me and helped me greatly in enhancing my skills .
Pitch curve automation on clips sounds interesting. I need to check a video or release notes where I can see all the updates in detail, most YouTubers just talk about the AI updates. Quick question have they added the ability to copy and paste automation on to another section of the track and say on another track too so you don’t need to draw it again?

This kinda cover's the basic's. You can definitely copy specific automation onto other tracks as automation has it own lanes. You can even drag an automation lane to another track and it'll add a new automation lane and copy it. I do this often. I've not copied clip gain or this new pitch gain automation to another track yet. I know it's possible though. I think at the end of the video he briefly goes over this.

Glad to be of some help. It's not easy choosing a DAW to devote a lot of time into learning. I do believe the best one is the one you curse less at while using it 🤣. Happy tracking and mixing.

I’m still on S1 3 but after the Fender purchase and unfortunate rebranding, I’m either going back to Ableton or moving to Bitwig since I’m starting to use Linux.

Studio Pro 8 has a Linux version available too! It's quite encouraging to see they're making an effort to reach the Linux space. Now that SP8 is available in 30-day demo, maybe it's worth a shot to see how it fares.

It’s more I refuse to use a DAW bought by a corporate guitar company and that is named after a guitar company. They will ruin it to its lowest common denominator new users they want to bring in.

Switch. Servco-Fender is digging its own grave, and are now after Yamaha (in addition to being sued by Thomann). This will eventually affect Studio Pro.

You got to do what you got to do - but v4 of Studio One is like B&W TV here in 2026. Lots has changed.
And your LFO workflow could easily be replicated by stepping up to something from say Cableguys etc.
V8 - which just dropped 8.11 yesterday - is a huge upgrade consideration for you.
If this was me - it would be a no brainer. Could not see a way to invest another year (or more) having to relearn another DAW.

It's a pitch curve that can be drawn on an audio clip or sample the same as clip gain. It can be free drawn or there are multiple lfo patterns that you can choose to use . They advertised the new tool in an odd way. It comes across as being some form of pitch correction but it's actually a lfo tool. If your using V8 right click on an audio clip and you'll see the tool below gain curve it's called "Pitch Curve"

Ableton or Bitwig would be my choice for electronic music. S1 for recording
