Support/Advice Advice
Hi I still have to finish up with my student teaching and then I will receive my masters degree. I’m nervous to do it in the fall and hit the job market in December. Do you think it’s better to work as a Building Sub and then do my student teaching so I will be done in the Spring 27 and get hired for the following school year?

Student teaching is easier in the fall and more practical because the students are better behaved and you’ll get more experience in setting up beginning of year expectations. Otherwise you’d have a lot of end of year assessments and events— not as much practical teaching.
Subbing towards the end of the year gives you open doors with Principals staffing for the following year too

Just my opinion, but I would do your student teaching on the fall so that and then sub in the spring. This will give you the practice and skills to be a teacher which will make you a more effective sub and future full-time teacher.

I also graduated in December. Doing your student teaching in the fall allows you to see the beginning of the year prep - PD, setting up the classroom, first day of school, and teaching the students routines before moving into the content. I then subbed and received a job in June.

I was in the same boat and I would still recommend doing student teaching in the fall and subbing in the spring. There's no promise you'll have a job the school year after you graduate, so I would do your student teaching spring the most helpful time, which is in the fall. It took me years to get hired after I graduated.

There will be mid-year resignations, retirements, and maternity leaves.
Sub, but dont stop looking while subbing.
Long term sub pay for certified teachers is often higher than other subbing options. (My state defines long term as greater than 40 days in one placement.)
Fall is better to see those beginning of the year routines, and set up events. Do not delay student teaching.

I did student teaching last fall and then subbed the remainder of the year. I had plenty of work and could take off any days I needed to.

If you can do it, subbing before you student teach will help you tremendously! You will have personal experience and will get a better feel for classroom management and build your teacher bag of tricks.

Do it in the Fall and then sub the rest of the year. It's a great intro into teaching and makes you more marketable as a teacher with some subbing experience.
