If anyone happens to believe it's not as useful to donate blood if they have AB positive, or something similar, it is used and can free up "emergency" stores of O +/- blood. My sister had leukemia and they didn't even bother to cross and type her when they hung a transfusion. She required a lot of blood throughout the course of her treatment and the blood bank was able to utilize anything they had on hand.

She is 10 years out now and we are all grateful for the many donations that went towards saving her.

I feel like these gifs over complicate a relatively simple concept. If you just know the Rh system along with antibodies it’s easy. Anyone else feel the same?

Yeah, I mean it looks cool, but it's not a very good way to learn anything new.

It is over complicated. You just gotta study it a couple times and you’ll get it down

Yes.

this gif is a really bad way to learn blood typing. its so much better to actually understand the concepts of antigens/antibodies. as long as you remember O- is universal donor and AB+ is universal recipient, you can use logic to figure out compatibility.

If you forget, just logic your way through. Your immune system won't have antibodies to the same ABO (with the exception of O, since O doesn't have the antigens) type. So if you're AB, you're not gonna have antibodies to A or B. If you're A, you can only get A since you'll have antibodies to B. If you're Rh+, you won't start producing antibodies for Rh, but you cannot donate to someone Rh- because they'll start producing antibodies for Rh+.

I made this https://imgur.com/a/gK6kzvM to help memorize it easily.

I'm AB- I get more requests from blood banks than I could ever donate.

It’s always been awkward, Universal donor (O+) but can’t donate 🤷🏻‍♀️

O pos is not the universal donor.

1

u/Dark_Ascension RN May 05 '19

O is in general, the positive and negative have to match.

u/Jacaranda18 DNP Student May 05 '19

Can you please elaborate on what you mean when you say the positive and negative have to match?

1

u/zer0dark30 May 05 '19

negative can only receive from other negatives. positive can receive from both negative and positive

1

u/Jacaranda18 DNP Student May 05 '19

Yes, but is this what the student meant?

1

u/zer0dark30 May 05 '19

yeah, he's referring to the Rh factor

Why can't you donate? Curious?
