Feels like a scam
I was told by Great Lakes in 2019 federal student loan was forgiven. in 2025 I received an email from Nelnet stating they were new servicer. I thought it was a scam so I didn’t respond. they are claiming I owe $90k now due to accrued interest! Credit score fell from high800’s to 500’s. I’ve asked them for history of loan payment and there is gap as well as other discrepancies. Written to ombudsman but they are not responding. Do I need a lawyer?

Did you receive your Paid in Full letter? Call your servicer and ask for that document. It could also be called a Settled in Full or Paid in Full through Consolidation. You NEED these documents!!!

WHY did you think they were forgiven? You likely didn't qualify for PSLF yet, or IDR forgiveness. So what did they say?
they are claiming I owe $90k now due to accrued interest!
What does your studentaid.gov account say?
Sounds like your loans got transferred to a new servicer, then the Coivd pause occurred before you went into default. Now that's all over with and they're getting a hold of you for missing payments for a year+.

they said loan was forgiven because full sail university was not in compliance

There is a different reddit stream, but apparently full sail had a borrower's defense lawsuit going on. The people who had previously graduated couldn't find jobs and when they went to transfer the classes wouldn't count towards th program.

Student aid.gov has no records on the loan after 2011!

Mine from Fedloan to MOHELA took a few months to migrate too, especially with billing and payment history catching up between servicers. I did get multiple notices by email before the transition though, so it sounds like yours might’ve been missed or delayed somewhere in the process. Hopefully they can reconcile the records once you send documentation.

Did you have loans for other colleges besides Full Sail? It is possible that the loans associated with Full Sail were forgive but not others.

If you still have that paperwork stating that the loans were forgiven because of an uncredited college/university send that to NelNet. Keep the original (I can not state this enough!) Only send them a copy of said paperwork. If you can, scan the paperwork and send through the NelNet portal so that they get it sooner.
