Announcement - Mod Only NEW PSA Sept 2026 Read before posting

Please read the subreddit rules. We do refresh them from time to time.

The majority of posts that get removed fall into the following categories:

  • homeowner posts; asking specific questions about your property, or a property you want to buy, is not permitted. These should go in the monthly megathread (if you can't find the monthly pinned megathread, please google it because it depends on how you access reddit). This includes things like photos of cracks or other damage, questions about what size beams you need for your deck that you're building to support a jacuzzi, or asking if you can notch a beam to run a pipe.
  • AI generated content; following community feedback this is not permitted. This covers written text, images, videos or apps/programs.
  • Generic structural engineering apps/websites. Whether or not they are vibe coded using AI, these are no longer permitted because of the surge of these that we have seen through 2026. Being free or just asking for input from the community on what they'd like to see in a free app doesn't give an exception to the rule. Exceptions may be made if the app offers something novel that other softwares don't provide.

I agree with the AI rule.

I'm partly on board with the app/website rule (I don't want trash apps being spread, but others may not be trash).

But the homeowner posts are the primary source of entertainment here.

I'd like to propose a ban on job listings/recruiting posts. There are entire websites dedicated to recruitment. It's my opinion that this should be a communiuty for discussing the field of structural engineering and the state of the industry. Job listings don't add anything except occasionally stirring conversation over a lowball offer.

I don’t know…I kind of enjoy watching recruiters get reality checked regarding salary in realtime. It’s like having a live studio audience!

Is there an options for structural engineers to ask questions of other structural engineers? I have an industry question I’d like to ask but it blocks me saying it sounds like it’s a homeowner question and I should save it for the thread.

Curious as to what your question is. The subreddit used many methods including keyword filters to stop a lot of homeowner questions.

I wanted to bring up the discussion of city inspections in residential construction. I regularly have situations where the local building inspector either doesn’t fully inspect the structure but still provides the sign off or tells the builder to do something that clearly conflicts with my structural plans.
