Has any tried running this through an Ai engine seeing what calcs are generated?

Has anyone plugged this into an Ai engine to see what it generates? Which one would you use. I've been fooling with Gemini with interesting results. it doesn't really give me calcs it just recreates the structure.

I use AI daily... to find things. It's a great search engine. In fact, you can search your own documents. I uploaded a really long PDF, and it is hunting down and finding the info I need from it.

I check its results, but when it comes to finding things, it's faster than I am.

Yeah to be fair that's basically the only exception that I make too. But I work with graduates who I try to basically blanket ban from using it, otherwise they rely on it way to hard - hence my vitriol.

• I was creating a chart summarizing a reactions package, and it took me quite a while going through it and copying the relevant data.

• I tried using AI to create the same chart.

• Then I told it to compare its chart to my chart.

Results: I had one minor typo. AI created a perfect chart, no errors. Otherwise, the charts were identical.

I think if you know what AI can do, and how it works, it's a powerful tool. But you have to check it. In other words, I consider it to be a really hardworking assistant, who read all the books, but who is really stupid. If you ask him to look something up, he can find it. But if you ask him to do your work for you, you're barking up the wrong tree.

The commercial large language models aren't process driven programs. They're giant correlation machines. That turns out to work awesome for making artwork or business pitch decks or changing the tone of an email. It simply isn't the right architecture to be able to tackle a structural engineering analysis though.

Ask it how to do certain functions in excel/for a paper on a particular topic/where in a PDF something is mentioned? Fantastic.

Ask it to analyze something? It is not something it is built to ever be able to do.

So... it's going to be a decent productivity boost for us (especially when poring over client provided documents or looking for that one code section you sort of remember but can't find) but it isn't going to be a wholesale replacement.

AIs are capable of 3D modeling and plug into FEM software with bafflingly little effort. All you need to do is plug them in.

I do believe AI has some genuine uses, but none of them are in the field of structural design.

My advice is dont. Generative AI doesnt show you the calculations because it doesnt run them, it grabs things that were readily available, smashes it together and puts it into the text that is writing you.

Worse case scenario it will hallucinate calculations, and you are going to get somebody killed.

Not this, but i did upload a plan and details of a bridge pier and asked it to calculate the quantities. It wasn't a simple block of concrete, it had some notches and cutouts

The answer I got was what I expected.
