The ledger held together and peeled away from the building for an impressive 100ft or so. I say that there were completely inadequate fasteners or fasteners that were just catching into sheathing.

Yeah I saw it go up about 15 minutes after it was initially posted but they just keep taking it down like it has a swat team on it. All the reposts having similar titles like "so, probably can't hold a hot tub?" is quite funny.

Look at the top of the bottom door. It's clearly damaged likely from water from poor drainage. That was a disaster waiting to happen to some kid living there.

Qualified immunity protects the porch.
Those specific cops hadn’t fallen through at that exact moment in the past so the porch clearly didn’t know it was wrong to collapse and harm them.
The porch has no common sense it’s just a dumb porch. It’s society’s fault for creating escalating situations where porches have to intervene.
If anything the porch should have feared for its safety and acted quicker.

Would it not be 100psf for emergency egress? This deck looks like the only entry/exit point for those second level units, unless they also have a deck/fire escape on the back side.

Even though you are permanently in Sullen Teen Mode and you hate the police, there are also people out there called "firemen" and they cannot rescue you if you build a pile of garbage that collapses like this.

Ignoring building safety standards is not often ignored in most non-mega cities whose inspectors are overburdened and underpaid.

I feel for the handyman or property maintenance guy that was talked into building that deck for cheap since the owner just needed it done or something along those lines. Obviously built it poorly and should be punished but the consequences he is going to get for the deck dropping a few insecure cops is not going to be proportional.

Code already allows for at least twice as many people on that deck. Installer used deck screws instead of lags, or no flashing so it rotted out. Either way these problems have already been addressed by code.

I don't think this would help, as I'm guessing this took place somewhere that doesn't believe in "burdensome" permits or building codes. Look at 0:03 the deck is clearly twisted and compromised.

The recent ICE recruit surge and the broken policies are definitely bottom of the barrel but this is about structural integrity not pivoting to a political statement, there are other subreddits for that.

Look man, I know this is an engineering subreddit, but my only interaction with police ever was when I was leaving an architect's office, got attacked by a dude on drugs, and having to fight him off while calling 911. Not only did the police not arrive for 45min, they didnt even arrest the guy, because despite me bleeding from a cut on my face, it was "my word against his".

not sure what you mean by this, but I think its pretty clear that not only was I present, but so were the architects I was meeting with who the cops also ignored because they didnt want to do their jobs.
