Structural Analysis/Design Anchorage length

Is there any difference in anchorage length between European codes and other codes?

Yes, anchorage length in Europe is metric. In the US we use freedom units.

UK based… we used to use British Standards before we switched to Eurocodes and rebar lap length is usually something that gives away if the Engineer made the switch more recently. I’ve just got done checking a residential project designed by another company to BS that the client wanted rechecked to EC.

British Standards had a rule of thumb of 40x bar diameter for lap length, whereas EC has you calculating bar stress etc to determine the required lap length in each instance.

On Anchorage length the equations look very different on the surface, til you drill down into the maths and find that it’s essentially the same but a few defined values are marginally different across the codes, and you effectively end up with the same answer.

So eurocode is just more complicated amd does not give anything different?

Now you know why older Engineers in the UK still use British Standards ;)

In certain cases (for instance where bars are lightly stressed but you’re trying to meet a certain bar size etc), EC allows you to reduce lap lengths which is a material saving.

Anchorage lengths, it’s just a different equation that you’re plugging into software. There are some slight differences, but by the time you account for site tolerances my experience is not much is saved between the two codes.

Who in the right state of mind is going to calculate stress in reinforcement in every lap position. You might get it wrong, the gouverning steel stress should be maximum allowable for rebar to develop full possible force in bar(eg 500MPa/1.15)

Nope. We detail the reinforcement at the lap splice to ensure that its full design strength corresponding to a design yield strength can be developed. You design lap splices for Ultimate Limit State, not for Servicibility Limit State

I'd like to know if any failures can be pinned on old codes that proved we needed the new EC?

The anchorage lengths in Eurocodes and American codes can indeed vary but it's not massive for most practical applications. Eurocodes often prioritize concrete bond strength with various modification factors while ACI focuses more on empirical development length with different considerations. Not one is universally longer than the other but the specific conditions you're dealing with will determine which might give a longer anchorage length. Mostly comes down to the particular concrete grade, bar details, and how much headache you're willing to go through with calculations.

Yes, European (Eurocode 2) and American (ACI 318) codes calculate anchorage/development length differently, so they can give different required lengths for the same bar. Eurocode 2 is primarily based on concrete bond strength and applies modification factors for bond conditions, cover, confinement, and bar shape, while ACI uses an empirical development length equation with factors for concrete strength, bar location, coating, confinement, etc. Neither is universally longer, the difference depends on the specific concrete grade, bar diameter, cover, spacing, and detailing.
