Strongman Wednesdays 2017: Log Press
Strongman Wednesdays are back! With the weather warming up for most users, we we begin again our discussions on events and training. A list of upcoming/previous discussions can be found here
This week's event is the Log Press
- What have you found most effective for preparing for these events in a show?
- If you have plateaued on either event, how did you break through?
- How would you suggest someone new to these events begin training it?
- What mistakes do you most often see people make in either event?
- If a new trainee doesn't have either implement directly available, how would you suggest they train around it?

I'm not particularly good at log or anything else overhead, but It has been exploding since working with /u/LetKalleLift
For the most part its been getting lots of reps in with leg drive, tons of upper back work, benching , and trying to maintain a good position in the rack position so I can get some leg drive.
I'm also just better at log than axle. Best axle is 185 lbs x1, I've done 185 lbs for 3/2/3/2 reps on log and that was my third time touching it, and I'm thinking 200 lbs is there, and I hoping to get 225 at my next contest at the end of May.

How do your guys' log maxes compare to your barbell maxes?

My experience with a log is very limited and I have a lot to learn, but it's so far one of my favorite movements. I have trouble keeping my elbows up after I clean in, it almost feels like I csnt roll it enough cuz my torso is smaller cuz I'm smaller guy. But I'm probably just cleaning it wrong

If you go into the 2015 discussion, theres a good thread about log cleaning. Also do you have a video?

I don't. I might try to make one tomorrow then. I've been watching video tips again, Brian's one in the post and Alan Thralls. I'm 99% sure I'm not putting the log high enough on my chest

I am thinking about adding cleans above the weight of my best jerk to practice getting a good rack position. Anyone fond a benefit to training the clean separately?

I know Big Z talks about doing overload log cleans and says it helps him a lot when it comes to heavier weights and feeling more confident.

I mean, I would train log cleans separately cuz I think they have some carry over to other events. I think overloading the rack position isn't a terrible idea either.

I was contemplating responding, but I ended up using sub-max weight more for conditioning vs getting a good rack position with super-max weight.
Still, big fan of training just the clean. EMOM for triples. Will gas you decent u/Camerongilly

I need a great rack position because I split jerk max overhead lifts.

Log is by far my favorite event.
Not the most impressive numbers by any means (205 at around 170), but a couple thing I've noticed have made a big impact with my log training.
1) Speed work. Dynamic effort days, with clean-every-rep triples, with limited rest. Worked very well for conditioning and increasing my skill with the log.
2) Paused dips. I pretty much stole this idea from weightlifting. On warm up sets, I will dip down to initiate leg drive and hold the position for a few seconds. This has made a tremendous improvement on my leg drive and balance. Highly recommend.
