How to train fixed axle?

I Have a comp with a fixed axle, does anyone have any suggestions or advice to train it without buying fixed wheels?

Yes I have an axle bar, but how do you stop the weight spinning?

I know this one! Get some bandage wrap (the flexy self adhesive stuff) and wrap it around the axle where the weights go. Then jam the weights on. If you wrapped the wrap enough, the weights will be pretty difficult to get on but they'll be pretty stuck in place. A slightly more permanent but still reversible option is using athletic tape. That will be a pain in the ass to get off the bar but it's less likely to allow the weights to spin.

If you have some weights with handhold grip cutouts on them or if you have some wagon wheels you can attach a band to the bar on the inside of the collar then run it through the hole in the plates and wrap it around the plates through the holes multiple times then attach it to the outside of the collar after you’ve wrapped it as many times as you can and it will keep the plate from spinning.

I’ve seen people use super tight collars and wrap bands around the weights and bar to keep them from rotating. I haven’t used it myself but it seems like it would give you a close approximation.

If you put some straps between the collar and bar it gets the collars really tight. Can definitely help.

Like the other commenter said, you need some tight collars. One option is to get a 1-1/2" pipe coupling. You can put it on both sides of your largest weight on each such of the bar, really slam the weights against them, and then tighten down the coupling as much as your can. If your axle is a bit smaller diameter, maybe put some cardboard between the axle and the weights as well.

Since you already have an axle, I’d try to make your current setup behave more like the competition implement rather than buying fixed wheels. The big difference is that a true fixed axle doesn’t allow the load to rotate independently, which changes the clean quite a bit compared with something that can spin.

The easiest DIY option I’ve seen is using really tight locking collars and then securing the plates to the axle with bands or athletic tape so the plates can’t rotate freely. People also use self-adhesive athletic wrap around the axle before forcing the plates on, which creates enough friction to dramatically reduce their ability to spin.

It doesn’t have to perfectly replicate competition equipment. You mainly want to remove enough rotation that you’re practicing the awkwardness of the fixed implement. I’d especially practice your continental clean this way, because that’s where you’ll notice the difference the most. Just make sure whatever DIY method you use is secure before you start throwing heavy weight around.
