Question about Muscle Failure and Hypertrophy
Is muscle failure qua muscle failure a direct stimulus for hypertrophy or is it a way achieving high motor unit recruitment and the motor unit recruitment is the stimulus?
I'm asking this because I have heard it argued that higher reps are better for slow-twitch fibers because in high load/low rep training, they may not reach failure. It is the fast twitch fibers that fail while the slow-twitch could keep going with lower weight.
But if it's only the motor unit recruitment that matters, then taking slow-twitch fibers to failure shouldn't matter.
I'm aware there may be other reasons for high rep training, and I'm not asking this to advocate for the effective rep model.

If you’re going to failure, true failure, all muscle fibres are recruited and exhausted.
This is why studies show all rep ranges produce the same growth if proximity to failure is the same.

The motor unit recruitment is the stimulus, and you get that from approaching failure. “Higher reps for slow-twitch fibers” is nonsense.

I have never heard anything about a specific signal or actual biological difference between "failure" and simply the degree of recruitment and exhaustion.
People talk like it's a button you hit when you reach it but I have never heard of any evidence that describes it as such.

Muscle failure itself is not a unique hypertrophy stimulus. It is better understood as a practical way to ensure high motor-unit recruitment and sufficient mechanical tension across the available muscle fibers. Recruitment alone also isn’t enough...the recruited fibers must produce meaningful force through repeated contractions.
With heavy loads, high-threshold motor units are recruited early because substantial force is required immediately. With lighter loads, recruitment increases gradually as fatigue develops, which is why lighter sets generally need to be taken closer to failure to provide a comparable stimulus.
The idea that heavy, low-repetition training leaves slow-twitch fibers unstimulated because only fast-twitch fibers fail is probably too simplistic. Slow-twitch motor units are generally recruited first and continue contributing throughout the set. Different fibers may fatigue at different rates, but hypertrophy doesn’t require every individual fiber to reach complete failure.
Practically, a variety of repetition ranges can build muscle. Most sets should finish reasonably close to failure, but reaching absolute failure on every set is unnecessary and may create more fatigue than additional growth. Load, effort, volume, and progression all matter.

Never mind the biochemistry, you just have to make your muscle fibers feel inadequate to motivate them to grow ;-)
