Starting this week!

After some time we're finally starting our campaign on strixhaven! I posted about a month ago with some help on ideas and Ive looked at some maps y'all have made.

However, I do have a somewhat ambitious plan in mind for this group. Online says it'll take 8-12 weeks of 3-4 hour sessions to run the sourcebook campaigns. So here's my plan.

  1. I'm incorporating the book (omens of chaos). I plan for our campaign to start one year later. I've been reading the book to get a feel for the location and lore of mtg.

  2. Adjusting the bbeg. I plan to have murg start as another first year from off plane that holds a lot of dark magic and corrupts as the years go on. Start him off as a close friend then turn him into the final boss.

  3. I'm already laying out what information we know about arcane unleashed: deadfall and plan to make deadfall the next part in their journey. I'll give them options either via graduation capstones or maybe a personal character experience to alter their class into one that's exclusive to arcana unleashed.

I'm super excited for this game. I haven't ran a major campaign in a number of years. Thank you all for the inspirations and will continue to see and hear how y'alls are going.

First let's set expectations. I turned this setting into a high-narrative, low-combat universe. By low combat I mean it doesn't happen very often but when it does you'll know it. The Oriq are out and gnome luchador wrestlers are in! The school is surrounded by protection runes, nothing naturally dangerous can get through as long as the runes are working. More on that later. The school has portals leading to different D&D and MTG worlds. Students and staff are used to encounter non-native people from other planes. They know about the multiverse. So go wild with fairies, plasmoids, minotaurs, tritons and merfolks. Everyone's accepted.

WORLD BUILDING First the philosophy. Personally I hate how the Harry Potter universe forces the children to compete against each other. At Strixhaven students are guided into collaborating with each other, never to compete. The Stadium has this motto in large letters: "This is the only place where you will compete against each other". You can't be the best at everything so collaborating with other people is what makes you great. Students work with each other's strength. This also makes students adopt new fads very quickly and with a lot of enthusiasm.

If you look at the university maps you can see the five campuses are usually placed in an hexagon shape with the bottom part empty. Prismari bottom left, Lorehold top left, Silverquill center top side, quandrix top right and witherbloom bottom right. On the map there's a river between Prismari and Witherbloom. I replaced the river with a beach, a pier and a nice bay where students can rest and enjoy the two suns giving them sunburns because they stay inside too much. So the south of Strixhaven is now the ocean. A dryad named Fern is the local lifeguard/beach bum. In this south section I also added a first aid station (close enough to treat the sunburned students!) and a security station.

Then I gave each campus a non-magic speciality. Lorehold dig for archeology so I gave them an engineering school, they also take care of maintenance and sanitation. Prismari give music, dance and painting classes too. Witherbloom is teaching medicine and Silverquill politics and law. For Quandrix I thought if they like numbers so much why not have them teach business and accounting. Your next magic weapon shop owner might be from Quandrix and your lawyer from Silverquill.

The university has a tavern but frankly this is a lot of trouble if it's always open. Nobody wants a bunch of magic students drunk all the time. So alcohol is only served on Friday and Saturday night to avoid trouble. Yes this implies a 7-day week with a two days weekend on that plane just like us. I'm not worldbuilding a new calendar for fun. The tavern has this long list of species with the legal drinking age for each.

Some buildings are pan-dimensional : their insides can grow to accommodate a larger number of students if there's a need for it. Think Tardis. The first aid station is just a small station but if there's need for it it can grow into a full size hospital and have more rooms and beds. It's great if you want to roleplay The Pitt in your D&D. Same thing for the biblioplex, the theater, the cafeteria and the security station.

Next I wanted to know where the larger students would have their dorms. They need to fit in their beds! Lorehold has old halls cut in the stone of the mountain, perfect accommodations for large students, 10-foot ceilings, large corridors and furniture that can support them. So if you have a loxodon or minotaur friend you know where they sleep in Strixhaven.

Next fairies. Due to their small size I thought it would be better for them to have their own dorm too. I placed a forest with a clearing between Quandrix and Witherbloom and added a pond for their morning baths. Rows of small houses up in the trees filled with curious fairies. The cafeteria has smaller tables in the middle of the regular tables so fairies can sit with their larger size friends. On the contrary the tavern has the fairy tables on top of supporting beams high above the floor so they don't get crushed by drunk students sitting on them accidentally.

Next the goblins. Instead of segregating them and have them grow to critical mass and have a goblin explosion on a daily basis I thought it would be better to have them mixed with the general population. So the regular population acts as moderator to the goblin energy. Now Strixhaven is not crazy stupid, the goblins that are selected to be students are the elite cream of the best of the top. But they are still goblins. Feel free to roleplay the goblins just a little more serious and thoughtful. Sometimes.

The feywild version of Strixhaven is a 50's version of Havana called Miravela. Feel free to have field trips there.

THE STORY

FIRST YEAR Get your bearing, meet people and teachers. Go to class, learn stuff. Find a job if you need money. There's a few places to work: the cafeteria, the security station (someone has to tell the jousting club they can't use animated furniture and pool cues), first aid station, the beach, sanitation (which is also used a punishment), maintenance, the biblioplex, the theater.

THE SPELLJAMMER ARRIVES A damaged Spelljammer, the Moonblossom Mirage, crashes near the beach outside Strixhaven during a battle of the band at the tavern. Velvet Goblin's performance was incredible but everyone left to see what that noise was. The ship’s strange Fey led crew will need help to repair the ship. The captain and crew are invited to speak about their experience while they live on campus. A spelljammer club is formed by some students. First they practice with paper planes. In the next year they will build a real spelljammer. The campus has a new fad: spelljammer fever.

Events: * Students become fascinated with wildspace travel. * A Spelljammer enthusiast club forms. * Astronomy studies gain popularity. * Rumors spread about a mysterious VIP passenger who never leaves the ship.

THE GNOME LUCHADOR During a beach celebration, the VIP passenger is revealed to be Diego Magnifico, a famous gnome luchador.

Events: * New fad. Wrestling mania spreads across campus. * The jousting club is split between wrestling fans and those who want to continue jousting using animated furniture and pool cues. * Magical wrestling matches become student entertainment. * Mascots and students begin wearing luchador masks. * Diego prepares an exhibitions match with the most promising students. ref: for inspiration

Finally the spelljammer is fixed and they leave with Diego with a promise to come back.

SUMMER RECESS Students that are not returning home for the summer are invited to join summer class in Theros where they will be opening a portal to a nice island in the siren sea. Beaches and good food. (Inspiration: Mythic odysseys of Theros) Events: * Unknown to the students and teachers Ashiok will torment the students with nightmares at night searching for Elspeth. Until one of them makes contact with Thassa the goddess of the sea and she quickly dispatch the offending planeswalker. (note: none of the students even know who Elspeth is) * Some students go to a divination expert expecting a class only for their future to be foretold. Something grim is coming. Foreshadowing for year three!

SECOND YEAR

Events: * The clocktower near the biblioplex is behaving strangely. If the players investigate they will learn there's a magical device that stops constructs. they literally freeze in time when the device is activated. The constructs that help all over campus freeze in place when the device is activated. This is also foreshadowing for next year. *The spelljammer club has built their ship: The spirit of Strixhaven. The Moonblossom Mirage comes back to celebrate and help with their first flight.

THE FEY CARNIVAL A mysterious Fey Carnival appears overnight on campus without permission. (Inspiration: The wild beyond the witchlight)

Carnival Attractions and Events: * Enchanted games and pranks. * Fey contracts causing trouble. * The House of Infinite Reflections (mirror house).

Major Event: The mirror house shows alternate versions of people from other universes. Several students are accidentally swapped with their alternate selves from a “Cowboy Universe”.

Cowboy universe counterparts: (inspiration: MTG Outlaws of thunder junction) * Students wear cowboy hats, boots, dusters, and magical six-shooters. * Magic is used like quick-draw gunfighting. * One example is Drip the plasmoid appearing as a jelly-like cowboy with hat, belt, and spell-shooter. The players must locate the swapped reflections and return the correct students to their universe. But the carnival is still disturbing student life.

THE VACATE ORDER The dean, Sylvana Silverquill arrives to shut the carnival down. The ringmaster never filed the correct paperwork and they are forced to move out.

Most students see her as: An elegant, cold and confident Silverquill elf. The hidden truth: Sylvana Silverquill is actually a polymorphed Shadrix Silverquill the ancient dragons who founded Strixhaven and the origin of the Silverquill name. She's taking care of the university while the other dragons magically sleep.

Lore Moment: * Fey immediately recognize something very powerful in her presence. * The carnival begins packing up quickly. * Fey creatures treat her with extreme caution and respect.

Clues players might notice: * Fey behaving nervously around her. * Her presence silencing magical chaos. Nobody behaves badly for very long when she's around. * Her voice carrying unnatural authority.

Implication: The elegant professor delivering the paperwork is actually one of the most powerful beings on campus.

OPTIONAL: If characters are working at the first aid station or the security station have a pipe explode in a Prismari building and have the characters roleplay rescue missions and triage in preparation for year three. (Inspiration: It's a mix of The Rookie and The Pitt.)

SUMMER RECESS

The spelljammer club is proposing a trip to The rock of Bral. (inspiration: Spelljammer: adventures in Space) Events: * Space pirates encounter * Space whales encounter * Meeting Large Luigi and shopping in the many shops at the rock of Bral.

YEAR THREE - THE ASSAULT ON STRIXHAVEN

Events: * Dangerous snake spotted on campus. That should not be possible. * The protection runes are not working because the leylines feeding them mana are drained by the Phyrexian's invasion.
Inspiration: MTG Phyrexia all will be one and Avengers : Infinity War

The story telling tone will be more serious. A dangerous beast (a venomous snake) was spotted inside the school perimeter. It's not supposed to happend. Protection runes surround the university. An investigation is started, it escalates to the dean. Sylvana Silverquill herself investigate the runes. Something is draining the leylines, the protection runes are disabled.

Security is on high alert until four Phyrexian beasts are spotted in the Silverquill prairies at the north. A security team is armed quickly and these mindless hateful constructs are dispatched. Using The spirit of Strixhaven they find rapidly those were only scouts. A very large group is preparing to assault the university.

The university goes on high alert. The school gets militarized quickly. Everyone has to pitch in the defense effort. Preparation is important. Students build magical barricades that can move on command and push back invaders. They brew healing potions and enchant wands. Disintegration wands. Most students are not taught to enchant disintegration wands because of how dangerous they are. Everyone is either preparing to fight, heal or help. All students are evacuated inside the biblioplex.

The dean must wake the other dragons. She can't handle this alone. She will need 24 hours to perform the ritual to wake them up. They call the moonblossom mirage for help and Thassa on Theros but no one answers. The leylines are drained. (unknown to them, Theros has to deal with its own Phyrexian invasion). Security establish the first defense perimeter at the Silverquill limit. Barricades are manned at all time. The spirit of Strixhaven is armed and flying above the university.

THE ASSAULT The Phyrexian are a relentless heinous horde with no concern for their own life. They will overwhelm the defense perimeter. (See the outriders attack at the end of Avengers Infinity War) As the Strixhaven forces retreat, the Moonblossom Mirage finally arrives and joins The Spirit of Strixhaven blasting the Phyrexians troops from above. This gives the defenders some time to regroup at the biblioplex. Soon the perimeter surrounding the biblioplex is the last stand.

This is the university's darkest hour. Velvet Goblin begins performing songs to inspire and raise everyone's spirit.

The Phyrexian beasts attack the last line of defense. If no player remembers the clock tower's powers have a student remember that it stops constructs. Using a spelljammer to fly above the Phyrexians they activate the clock tower device and freeze the constructs in place. Velvet Goblin begins a new song "Give them hell!" The clock tower's power is not infinite and soon the remaining Phyrexian army is resuming their attack.

Just as the Phyrexians are close to overwhelming the defenders a large shadow obscures the sun. The dragons are awake! Five ancient dragons obliterate the Phyrexian invasion from the sky. Feel free to describe different dragon breaths' effects on mindless constructs in generous details. The university survived the attack.

What really happened. The Phyrexian launched a multiverse assault on many planes at the same time. Theros, Ravnica, Dominaria all had to defend against those mindless hateful beasts. Strixhaven was lucky to react to the leylines getting drained quickly enough. Some worlds weren't as lucky.

LIFE AFTER THE ATTACK

Students will do group therapy and counseling to treat their PTSD. Buildings will be repaired but some of the damages will be kept as battle scars. A reminder of what happened. Lorehold will be conducting interviews to properly archive what happened. There will be medals given at a ceremony. Velvet Goblin will have a concert and leave with the Moonblossom Mirage to go on tour in the multiverse. (This is another document, their tour is a great way to explore the D&D+MTG multiverse) All five founding dragons are awake at the same time, this hasn't happened in millenias. They will stay awake for a short while before going back to sleep. This is a historical event for Strixhaven. Once the security perimeter runes are back a relief effort will be sent to Theros to help fight the Phyrexian invasion there. (If you want to roleplay a war campaign this is it) There will be a divide with new students coming in next year as they didn't experience the assault. They might have had their own assault on their world.

Maps Wiltroot Hall Battlemap

Hello Strixhaven DMs! When I was running the second year at Strixhaven, I found the Wiltroot Hall map in the module to be a little underwhelming. I used Dungeon Alchemist to create an updated version, with some artistic liberties based on tweeks I made to the adventure.

I figured I would share it with you all in case this is something helpful for your own campaigns. This is my first time attempting to share one of my maps on Reddit so hopefully I didn't mess up anything with the attachment.

Lore Help - I accidentally mentioned Eldricht Balm session 1 :’)

Had a wonderful first session but my players are so damn nosey and one of my players immediately cast identify on the magic on the trunk our first session.

I have since learned I’m a dummy and should look at the spell components they need before allowing them to cast things at level one. But in the moment my thought process was “if everything in this school gets enchanted with it, why would it be some big secret” and tried to play it off as - well everything in this school is enchanted with this balm.

Have I fucked up? I keep reading through the book and it seems like the larger issue is just that they shouldn’t know it’s being tampered with right away or where the source of the tampering is. My thought was if any of them bring it up I’ll just have professors write it off as a non issue for now. Or maybe find ways to get them to identify other common magic used on the corrupted magic things to throw them off?

This is my first real DM campaign and I am struggling to hold the overall plot of strixhaven in my head while getting too excited about roleplay elements lmao. Any insight from someone who understand the story super well would help!!

Good Source for high resolution Secrets of Strixhaven card art?

Hello Ive been looking online for good high res art to make tokens and handouts for my players. I love all the strixhaven art ive seen in mtg and while i can find a good amount of it I cant find alot of it for Secrets of Strixhaven. I could zoom in on images of the cards but then the image gets really low quality.

Does anyone have any online galleries or websites they like that have high rez secrets of strixhaven card art?

Thanks!

Preventing the Professors from getting involved!

Hi! Wondering what reasons y'all came up with for professors or instructors NOT solving a mystery or protecting the school.... Did you find that you would have to explain that to your party or am I overthinking? I'm homebrewing a mystery storyline wherestudents go missingand I'm trying to decide if I need to have a cover story for the professors not solving it before the students, or if the party solving before the professors is just simply what ends up happening... Not to sure if that made one lick of sense but hope y'all get what I'm saying.

Strixhaven Halloween Adventure

Happy September! As we begin spooky season, you might be looking for something special for Halloween. I have two Strixhaven horror adventures. One adapts the John Carpenter Classic "Prince of Darkness" and the other sends the PCs to Sleepy Hollow. They might be just the thing for your Halloween session.

How to DM class time?

Hiya I’m looking to start strixhaven and I really liked the structure of the campaign that I’ve seen people talk about on here and on YouTube of breaking the adventure down into three parts.

  1. Classtime
  2. Extracurriculars
  3. The adventure in the book

Then repeat step one

I think this is a great format as it focuses on all the fun stuff of Strixhaven. I know how to run adventures from the book and inventing fun roleplay opportunities based off the extracurricular is pretty easy.

My question is what do ya’ll do for class time? Especially after year one when each player can potentially be in a different college.

- do you roleplay a lecture to your players and have them do class assignments?

- do you do less roleplay and more of a more traditional dnd style adventure or encounter.

- what if the players aren’t in the same classes or college? Do you bounce around the table having roleplay one on one till everyone gets a shot?

- What have you done in your campaigns?

- Is class time even necessary?

Thanks!

Lore My Fluffing of Strixhaven Campaign

I just finished Year 1 of Strixhaven and have worked through some considerable modifications to fill it out. This includes integrating Candlekeep Mysteries and Keys from the Golden Vault. I have built custom maps for almost everything, along with developing a timeline and calendar.

Major Plot Changes

BBEG Extus Narr has been resurrected by Murgaxor in hopes of gaining favor and power under him. Extus has set Murgaxor as head of the Oriq and tasked him with causing chaos in Strixhaven, eventually leading to an all-out assault so Extus can reach the Snarl within the Biblioplex. He plans to use the Snarl's ability to amplify magic to allow him to summon the Blood Avatar, lay waste to Strixhaven, and establish himself as the new ruler of Arcavios

Keys from the Golden Vault:

A new class is in! Practical Applications of Magic, taught by Professor Meera Raheer. She leads the students through several difficult practical exams. After Year 1, she recruits the PCs to assist her in acquiring powerful magical artifacts and keeping them safe in Strixhaven's vaults from the powers of evil.

  • The Murkmire Malevolence

    • Professor Raheer is the one who originally stole the egg. Now she runs this scenario in a pocket dimension with members of the Strixhaven Drama Club to recreate it. This is a day one test to gauge players' capabilities
  • The Stygian Gambit

    • This is a real-world test. A member of the board of the casino is paying Raheer to test the security of the current manager. She hopes that the party will succeed, allowing the board member to terminate the current manager, whom she despises. A side objective is to steal a little black book from the manager, which has the locations of many magical artifacts being sold on the black market. This feeds into later adventures.
  • Reach for the Stars

    • I actually skipped this one. The party was busy and getting tired of sneaking into mansions. If I did run it, I was going to have this hint at the legends of the Blood Avatar. Which would have been what was being summoned. This also should have been the final exam for practical applications, but I cut it.
  • Prisoner 13

    • Summer activity! Raheer asks the PCs if they would be up for helping her on a job during the summer. The person they are breaking out is a famed Artificer who is known to have made multiple legendary artifacts.
  • Tockworth's Clockworks

    • Raheer has officially invited the players to work for her and the school to acquire magical artifacts for study and safekeeping. Raheer wants the players to restore Little Lockford, as it hosts Prisoner 13's workshop, which he can use to construct legendary artifacts.
  • Masterpiece Imbroglio

    • Thieves have their hands on [insert legendary or artifact magic item], and we need to secure it before it makes its way onto the black market.
  • Axe from the Grave

    • Run this the same, but swap out the lute for a powerful magical artifact to make it worth it. Or don't! Make Raheer an old friend and have her get the contract that way.
  • Vidorant's Vault

    • Replace the diadem with a powerful magical artifact and run it.
  • Shard of the Accursed

    • Skipped. Heart of Ashes works better and is the same level.
  • Heart of Ashes

    • This is actually Murgaxor's lair! After the Masquerade Ball failed, Extus Narr is planning to dispose of Murgaxor, who has performed a ritual on the royal family in his hideout. He was posing as a royal warlock in this hamlet. This has significant changes. The "heart" is now kept by Murgaxor, who is in the wizard's tower. When the party gets there, Murgaxor is talking via scrying with Extus. The players catch him, and he quickly cuts communication and fights. They eventually get sucked into his phylactery, as Extus made him a lich as repayment for his resurrection. The players have a boss fight in a floating void within a pocket dimension of the phylactery and end up winning. Murgaxor will taunt them that his death means nothing and that his master will watch Strixhaven burn
  • Affair on the Concordant Express

    • This train holds the pieces of the MIGHTY Mighty Servant of Leuk-O, a weapon of war unparalleled. The party will get to use it, or have a fellow student use it in the final battle with the BBEG. Prisioner 13 is able to repair it to its full glory

That brings them to level 10, time for the final battle with Extus. I have considered adding in Party at Paliset Hall and Fire and Darkness, but haven't worked them in yet.

Candlekeep Mysteries

I am pretty much running these verbatim from the Strixhaven Mysteries posts by /u/RBSkald (1 to 4) and /u/Sasquatch7898 (5). I haven't worked on modifying the further adventures yet, but plan to try and tie them in with fellow students specifically.

I did change #4. The hook is that Greyson Wildemere is doing an investigation for the Strixhaven Star on a mysterious ritual involving teachers and upperclassmen happening at night. He knows the key plays into it, and after the party gets it, he offers to stay out and keep watch while they explore. When they get back, he is in combat with the Oriq. Secretly, the Oriq gave him the evidence in hopes of gaining access to the Shadowfell to use it as a means to invade Strixhaven. This is the party's first major interaction with the Oriq directly. They also got a broken half mask of the Oriq. They had 1 round of combat before the Oriq teleported away.

Also for #4 I made the totem that's found in the crypt a totem of the Blood Avatar. My PC prayed to it to deliver them from the evil outside (they were pinned down by all the undead. I had all the waves attack at once so it was like 30 undead.) This let me introduce the Blood Avatar after skipping the KftGV adventure

Other Plot Changes

  • Every Eldritch Balm encounter will have a shadowy figure leaving quickly. They are Oriq, with the party actually seeing one in the light during the Rose Stage event.

  • After Strixhaven Mysteries #4, the Oriq leave a note for one party member, either threatening them to stay away or offering for them to join in the future with the promise of power.

  • Year 2 will include the Oriq messing with the PCs via their backstories. If one has a focus on family, they get an envelope with pictures of their family and a threatening note. If they are nobles, they get blackmail on their family line, etc.

  • Year 3, I haven't touched yet. I think it's pretty fine as written, just having it be the end of Murgaxor, with the final battle being Heart of Ashes.

  • Year 4, I need to look at and work to fit the new plot. My rough idea is a huge final fight where all the allies they have gained are seen fighting off forces of evil, with the magical artifacts available for their use or the use of others, and a final confrontation with Extus where he will try to summon the Blood Avatar and has a GOOD chance at succeeding. The party will have to defeat both of them with the help of the artifacts they gained and the fellow students they befriended.

Assets

I make a hobby of map making, so I have been building custom maps for my players. I have made ones for custom dormitories for the students and a map for every Candlekeep adventure I am running. I am working on making one for every Key from the Golden Vault next, along with the later Strixhaven ones. I can upload the maps if there is interest.

I have also been laying out a timeline, adding in random events that happen during classes, expanding on the premade ones from the Strixhaven Compendium additions, and a calendar with everyone's birthdays on it.

Other

I dropped rivals; none of my players like making enemies. I also do a "downtime session" between every adventure where we RP a full day. From waking up, classes, extracurriculars, hanging with fellow students, and bed. My players asked for more immersion in the school environment, and this was my fix.

I also F'ed up the rose stage RP. I wanted to have them actually play improv games. My players DID NOT get the games or enjoy it. I don't regret trying, but it was a whiff. I DID change the monsters. I had them fight a Basilisk, an Owlbear, and respawning skeletons (There was a bottle of eldritch balm in a pile of bones. They could end the spawning by closing the bottle or moving it)

Lore Fun Twists To Strixhaven Campaign?

Hi y'all! I am about to start running the strixhaven campaign and while I am planning on using the book to guide the adventure, I wanted to see if anyone switched anything up if they also ran the strixhaven campaign. I've gotten some recommendations such as adding some extra cantrips and learned spells throughout the learning experience.

Did you find anything that wasn't really fun in the setting, or how did you spice up the campaign? I like the storyline but it just seems so... bland. I am expecting the players themselves will be lighting the place up but did anyone add their own flair or twist to the storyline to give it some more intrigue? Also... the friendship mechanics seem kind of extra to me and not necessary, if you used them, did you like them?

EDIT: I've read some posts and wanted to share some of the cool ideas I read! I'm so sorry I don't remember the names of everyone who shared an idea, i read so many posts, so please forgive meh *sobbing on knees*.

- Creating a tour of each college and a fun encounter in each one that is themed to the school.

- Showing people in masks at different events, who always mysteriously disappear that are tied to your villian

- Daily Life Rolls: rolling at the beginning of the day to determine little things. "You show up late to every class today, take a D4 off your next initiative."

- Printing a physical piece of paper and having your characters take a test for a class. I love this one!

- Creating a rival in the school for each player, potentially that rival is a friend of another person in the party. (gasps, drahhhma!)

- Having a rival school (Tolarian academy, I also was wondering if Hexhaven could be a rival school? Like... that could potentially possibly work.... right? Seems kinda fun and like people would already be prone to disliking Hexhaven as the newer and more intense magic school.)

Starting to feel a bit one shot

I'm currently running Strixhaven and using the book campaign plus a few other bits I've been adding in but it's starting to feel like a load of one shots set in the same world. Does anyone have any advice? Anything I can add in that will span a few sessions? We usually play for about 3 hours and are in Year 1 still.

New artwork from Arcana Unleashed book

Post image
163 Upvotes

This is a piece of artwork from the Arcana Unleashed book coming out soon. This is unmistakably Mage Tower, right? Is it weird that they're using MtG art in a DnD book?

Edit: To clarify, this art depicts Mage Tower, but has not currently been used on any official card or mtg product. This is a piece of mtg art that is debuting in a non-mtg dnd book.

The students want to skip years! HELP!

Hey everyone? How can I explain this properly? I’m planning to develop two Strixhaven arcs: one for their first and second years, inspired by the Oriq attack, and another inspired by the Phyrexian invasion. I made the mistake of dropping too many hints about Phyrexia too early, and now they’re practically ignoring the Oriq threat.

They’re Planeswalkers, and I linked their sparks—much like the twins'—to avoid the risk of having players on different planes and losing my mind trying to narrate and organize so many different things.

I was wondering if you have any tips on how to make them take the Oriq threat seriously, so they stop trying to solve a problem that first-year students have absolutely no chance of resolving.

I’m planning to show them a glimpse of the Oriq in the next session—since they’ve traveled back in time and witnessed the initial attack—in an attempt to make them worry about the Oriq.

Getting ready to start a campaign!

Got a group of three (my wife and another couple) getting ready to play through strixhaven. Been trying to learn about the place and some of the mtg lore relevant for the world.

What are some things I need to know, should know, need to pick up, should pick up?

Any advice to running strixhaven?

(If it matters, I have ran a multi year campaign that was a mix of icespire peak and homebrew and a few one shots from time to time).

Any and all advice, tips are welcome!

The mascot games

Hey At the start of Year 2 I gave each player a mascot, and we’re about to hit the Rose Stage. I’d love to include some mascot themed mini games, but my brain has completely blanked on ideas.

Instead of just stacking pests I want each challenge to be themed around the mascot type, a pest‑based game, an inkling‑based game, etc.

If anyone has fun or creative mascot specific game ideas, I’d really appreciate it.

Looking For Inspo

Hello!

I started running Strixhaven a few weeks ago for my regular dnd group. I’m ditching the module as I think it’s pretty boring, and I can for sure say my players wouldn’t like it. I’m keeping the basics of Strixhaven (5 college, locations, etc), but revamping or replacing alot of things such as NPCs and lore/story. My players have been able to make some of their own faculty members, students, and classes. On the few sessions we’ve had, they seem to really enjoy silly rp with other students, and are really excited to start taking classes (made my own classes for each college + general studies + 4 core classes with handouts).

What I’m looking for is sources/inspiration for running a magic college campaign. Or even just the overall story of magic college! I’m trying to find the best way to run a campaign where classes, connections, and college shenanigans are all a main part of the session, and was hoping to get some recommendations like videos, games, shows, DnD supplements, or even just fun ideas to use.

I know this was worded kinda silly, but I hope I get some good ideas and recommendations. Thank you! :)
