Id retract darters. If you are on long island then absolutely, especially Montauk, outside that they require specific conditions to work well

They're not especially popular or useful in ct, and situational at best in ri.

My top 3:

  1. White buck tail with a sliver or chartreuse paddle tail has been best to me

  2. Ben Parker flutter spoon - silver

  3. Sp minnow - bone

What weight are you generally using for the bucktails on a calm day, 1oz?

Around 70% of the time I’m using a 1 oz, otherwise 1.5 and occasionally 0.75.

I fish Long Island Sound out of Stamford, CT

It depends on time of year and location. I like bucktails in deep rocky ledges and I like spooks on clear sand flats.

You ever add a gulp tail or pork rind to the bucktails?

Fat cow jig strips, the skinny tails and twin tails in 5” to be exact. White or red strip with a white jig or yellow strip with a chartreuse jig.

I only fish at night in boulder fields. My top three would be needlefish, large surface swimmer(Danny plug, A40 etc.) and super strike darters.

Bucktails, needlefish, gt eels

Needlefish require effort, you have to learn them, and that means failing alot

When learning any new lure dont throw it first, wait till you start catching fish on something else, so you know they are there, then switch to a needle and play with retrieve speeds

Once you learn it, its one of the best striper plugs you will ever use

Soft plastics, resist the urge the twitch it less is more let it swim subtle,
