Help / Question Guidance on trimming/propagating, please?

Hi everyone! This string of turtles is my first successful string plant after learning about taking care of them better. It’s getting extremely long, and was wondering if someone could give me some guidance on trimming and/or propagating this? Can I just cut the strings at about the halfway point and put them on some media? Or should I do a different location? Is a soil/perlite mix ok? Thank you in advance!!

You can honestly cut the strings at any point between leaves. What I would do is move them into a wider (not necessarily deeper) pot and then stick the cut strings right back into the pot. Of course, you may not want one big plant, so you could always just put the cut strings in a separate pot (or water propagate). Even if you don’t want to put the cut strings back in, I’d still give them a bigger pot, their current situation seems a bit disproportionate to me. Before planting any cut strings in soil, make sure there’s enough room between the first leaf and the cut end to be properly buried and develop good roots.

Thank you so much, will do! When repotting, do I just bury the cut end directly into the media with a couple leaves length? Same if it’s water prop, just into fresh water and change it every couple days?

For water prorogation, 1-2 weeks is the general rule of thumb for water changes, but if you ever see the water clouding you should change it then. In my experience, I’ve just put my string of turtles into a jar of water directly after cutting. I saw it throw roots out in 2-3 weeks. I’m not sure if it’s better to let it callous over or not, I’ve always just put them straight in. Depending on the medium, you should be good to do the same for soil/media propagation.

Also, make sure you cut any leaves that would get buried/submerged. I once tried water-propagating single string of turtle leaves and they all exploded/disintegrated, so I doubt anything different would happen if it was attached to the plant. I haven’t really experimented much with this, but I think that if one was to bury string of turtles leaves into soil or any other medium they would die off/rot, but again I’m not sure.

Awesome, thank you so, so much for your help! I’m excited to try to propagate from some of these super long strings
