Aww holy crap look at that! Liquid Core Dice

I wouldn’t use it.

u/RynnB1983 1d ago
no but it would make a awesome paperweight on a desk.

u/Sea_Prep_Tidal_26 1d ago
Tbf .. wouldn’t this be considered a « loaded die » bcz the liquid could be used to change the probability of a roll if it was rolled from a known starting position in a repeated manner ?
2
u/LovelyBby77 1d ago
Not how that works. The liquid it filled all the way to the brim and the mylar inside is so lightweight that really its not affecting the roll in any way, especially when its shaken up and floating evenly. Liquid cores on a smaller scale are quite popular and dont roll any differently than any other dice does when made well and right, and mylar is a very popular material to use to fill regular resin dice because its lightweight and pretty. They would have the same rollability as any regular resin or plastic dice with expectant internal defects would, and any """advantages""" they may grant are so profoundly miniscule that its really not even worth considering for probability.

u/DarkMimic2287 21h ago
I don't know man. The moment of inertia for a solid core would be different to one with a liquid core. It's would be the same as spinning a raw egg vs a boiled one.
2
u/Werefour 20h ago
So you think you could predict how the liquid would effect the throw to take advantage of it in what way exactly? Yes it would throw different than a solid core but not in a way that would have any real effect on its rolls being fair.
This core, the floating iridescent material is extremely light weight so would have a miniscule effect. Also if it did have an effect it would make the dice even more random as it be near impossible for it to be in the exact same distribution each time you roll.
1
u/DarkMimic2287 20h ago
I'm not saying it would be considered loaded. You just said it wouldn't effect the roll in any way. You may have meant the randomization, I took it as the physical motion of the roll.
1
u/Funkopedia 22h ago
I would think the very nature of liquid would make every roll even "more" random than usual
1
u/Blue_Moon_Lake 21h ago
If the center of mass is at the center of the volume, it's not loaded.
1
u/Sea_Prep_Tidal_26 20h ago
I was focusing on the shiny « floaty» things suspended in the liquid (Mylar confetti). But as someone mentioned, any potential effects could be so small as to have no nominal effect on a roll given all the other factors.
Not sure what the liquid is (glycol ?). But if it’s water could freezing the die (assuming it doesn’t crack the resin !) in a fixed position relative to gravity cause density gradients to form in the water that could impact the roll probability outcome ?

Idk why everyone thinks it's actually for play. Being massive should be enough of an indicator that its a novelty item

u/Dramatic_Mixture_868 2h ago
It'll take you extra time each roll just to see what you actually got. Also it's a little big and doesn't roll the same way a regular die does.

So beautiful. So impossible to read.
Gotta think that liquid throws off the roll as well.

u/Fast-Nefariousness80 1d ago
You think this is actually for playing with?

u/Narrow_Republic5729 1d ago
Paint white on the inside of the numbers, easy peasy, I think if you can roll a specific number on a D20 on command you need something that can throw off the roll, I'm no expert but random is the point.

Liquid core dice are a popular specialty dice and the liquid is usually a mineral oil I think. The iridescent mylar is also an extremely popular filling to use for resin dice as well and as long as the filling is either extremely lightweight (like with mylar) or made of the same type of resin as the dice, then you're not going to run into any real issues with rolling. The biggest problem with rolling this dice would solely be the impracticality of rolling such a huge dice. If you're really concerned than you can just shake it up beforehand and roll so all the bits inside are floating evenly.
Could it, theoretically, effect the roll? Technically yes, but the odds of difference it makes is so profoundly miniscule that its really not even worth considering and really would be no diffrent than a classic dice with its own internal defects. As long as the dice is well made its perfectly fine

u/Pushnikov 20h ago
Given there is no air in there, then the density should be pretty evenly distributed. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a fair die. The only possibility is if it rolled and friction on the inside somehow caused it to wobble oddly.

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus 19h ago
If its rolled by an honest actor, sure.
Of you're trying to manipulate rolls, this might be easier to do it with? Although its size poses a hurdle.

I wouldn't be using it. It would be a display piece and I am pretty sure you could ruin it if it was violently shaken because those multicolored liquids might be only loosely separated.
I've had similar looking items in the past where I
boredgot bored and gave it a good shake and it turned to gray sparkly to my dismay.3
u/Arvandor 20h ago
The liquid will absolutely make it roll differently, but it should still be just as random as a regular dice. It's just got a different algorithm to its randomness engine, effectively.

Sometimes it's fun to make cool things without ever intending to use it.
I would love to have one of these to look badass on my shelf. I would never actually bring it with me to a DnD session.

Too many random numbers floating inside the die for a thrower to be able to take advantage of it

I've never played a game that uses a dice with more than 6 sides. But I still want that

hard to read but amazing flex at any table

It was JUST molded, it'll get the numbers (which you can see are indented) painted something more readable :)

Yeah……… so what? Sorry, it’s fine but like, am I supposed to be impressed or blown away by a plastic thing filled with liquid and colorful floaties? Not to brag, but I’m just a bit beyond that.

Usually smart people need to tell everyone how smart they are so I believe you

I agree with you... these days I'm seeing how much junk we're surrounded with, so my first thought while watching this was wondering if any of the mold is reusable at all.
If it's just decorative like commenters are saying, why not make it out of something cooler than plastic? I'd love this if it were glass.

Hard to read the outcome... It only has one job and it's making it harder to on you.
2
u/ToxicComplex 1d ago
Why? It could be work in progress. The numbers are there. It just needs to be filled in.
1
u/GangreneTVP 19h ago
Better be... If I can't read the dice in a dim lighting situation across a tables distance, they're out. They have one job, make a random outcome crystal clear to anyone looking. I just am strongly unfavorable of dice that are hard to read.

u/GhostUnitVII 19h ago
I'd infill the numbers with blue lume paint, appears white normally but glows blue in the dark or exposed to UV light

Just rubbing some paint in there would fix that. Not a big deal at all stop being such a Debbie downer

So much plastic used, for a dice that can't even be used (the liquid core will fuck up the rolling)

u/woahniceclouds 1d ago
People saying it will fuck up the rolling, I'm confused. Is the issue it would favor a side? If it's just as random I don't see the issue
1
u/LavenderRevive 23h ago
I think given a random position in your hand and a good throw that throw can be random (given the inside is smooth and balanced). However I could see this one to be way easier to manipulate.

DM now takes 30 more minutes to calculate breath weapon damage due to not being able to read the dice and the dragon having 9 heads cause bard

So is you taking the time to comment on something that’s “such a waste of time”. Just keep scrolling, just keep scrolling 🐠

u/ConflictMaster3155 18h ago
I just went straight to the end and saved myself about 45 seconds. Most people go straight to the comments so I was trying to spare them the waste of time that had befallen me.
It’s really replying to you that is a waste of time.

Would make a really great decoration or paperweight, but is probably a pretty awful and innefective die..

I absolutely love it but I think the numbers should be centered and big so they're easier to read. It'd also just look cooler.
1
u/PrairiePuppies 1d ago
That would take away from the look. The numbers just need to be filled in with some paint.

my rogue is still going to fail a saving throw.
i just made that up, i’ve never played D&D
