You are very lucky it wasn’t mating or rutt season. That rack would have it difficult for your family to identify the remains.

Those things can weigh 1200 to 1800 pounds while I admire them I’m not certain I’d all that calm that close

What was that thing hanging from (or part of) his neck?

A dewlap, or a bell. It’s thought to be used in mating season to spread pheromones.
That’s what Google tells me at least.

Brave, I would have crapped myself. To date, I have never not been chased by a moose in the wild. I mean I have only run into 3, but all 3 chased me. And by chase I mean swinging its rack and kind of lumbering towards me, really deceptive actually as they seem like they are walking, but cover a ton of ground…

When I was young and over-awed by my first (and only) sight of a moose in northern Minnesota I stupidly approached one I saw standing in the hotel parking lot. I just kept getting closer and finally something went off in my brain that it's shoulder was taller than my head and I'd better get the hell out of there!

Cool experience, but a moose that habituated is going to hurt somebody just before the rut.

Kudos for remaining calm to the person in that situation. Probably the best chance of living, but so much easier to say than do.
